Rams Battle Through SDSU Fall Classic Opener

Colorado State picks up wins in both singles and doubles
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Colorado State women's tennis team opened its final tournament of the fall season Friday at the SDSU Fall Classic. The Rams took on strong competition from both conference and non-conference teams, picking up three wins in singles and a win in doubles play.
Leyla Tozin earned a hard-fought victory over Saint Mary's Elif Gunal 7-5, 6-3. Tozin also found success in her doubles match, paired with Stella Simpson-Morgan. The freshman duo defeated North Carolina Central 6-0.
More singles success came from Dylan Voeks and Diana Lizarazo. Voeks took on Stanford's Emma Sun finishing with a final score of 6-1, 6-4, while Lizarao beat Michelle Kleynerman of Missouri 4-6, 6-3 when her foe retired due to injury.
Coach Mai-Ly Tran said she was pleased with how her team competed after several weeks of training.
"It was great to see some of our players compete after a few weeks of practice," Train said. "They are stronger, faster and more physical on the court."
Other Rams saw challenging matchups throughout the day. Sorcha Caves, Hanna Haber, Simpson-Morgan and Annika Planinsek battled through high level competition, falling in their matches.
Despite the results, CSU showed strong mental resilience and physical athleticism.
"We have improved a lot on consistency and extending rallies," Tran said. "The most important thing they've worked on is mental skills — focusing on their routines and tools to help them in the match."
The Rams will continue competition through the weekend as the SDSU Fall Classic continues in San Diego.
