Hammer throw success makes for good start to outdoor season
FORT COLLINS – Colorado State track and field began its outdoor season on home turf Friday afternoon as the Jack Christiansen Invitational got underway. The only collegiate event of the opening day was the hammer throw, but that didn't stop CSU from collecting multiple podium finishes.
Â
On the men's side, Colorado State was led by promising freshman Adam Hellbom who threw 62.54-meters/205-feet-2-inches to finish runner up. The throw puts Hellbom immediately among CSU's top 10 all-time in the event, tied with Jason Schutz (2008) for ninth all-time.
Â
Right behind Hellbom was Cameron Kalaf, who marked his CSU outdoor debut with a career-best 60.74/199-3.25 throw to finish third. Kyle Bigley rounded out a 2-3-4 finish for the Green and Gold as he recorded a career-best 56.12/184.25 to finish just outside the podium.
Â
The Ram women claimed the top two spots in their competition, headlined by Makayla Long who threw a career-best 55.51/182-1.25 to win the event. Right behind her was Klaire Kovatch, who tossed 54.62/179-2.25.
Â
An action-packed day is in store for Saturday as the Jack Christiansen Invitational resumes. The meet begins at 9:20 a.m., with the final event scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. For fans not in Fort Collins, the meet will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.Â
