Rams Snap String With Road Win
3/8/2025 7:04:00 PM | Women's Tennis
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In a season with built in, uphill battles, Saturday was a day to make the climb.
Â
Going to the brink at every possible turn, Colorado State's women's tennis team pushed past every challenge to post a 4-2 victory over UC Riverside, snapping an eight-dual losing streak.
Â
"Our team has overcome a lot of adversity, and today their resilience was on full display,"Â coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "They've really banded together, stayed positive, and are just starting to realize just how tough they are."
Â
With only two doubles teams, the Rams needed both to lay claim to the first point of the match. While the No. 2 pairing of Diana Lizarazo and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya breezed to a 6-0 win, the top team of Victoria Erecthchenko and Sarah Weekley forged through a tiebreak to post a 7-6 (5) victory.
Â
To bolster the dual was a tense as it could be, all five singles matches went to a third set. Colorado State's final trio of Zhadzinskaya, Lizarazo and Logan Voeks made sure the team would reverse its fortunes on the day, each posting a victory.
Â
Of the trio, only Lizarazo won the first set, coming through at the No. 5 spot with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 decision for the true freshman. At No. 3, Zhadzinskaya rallied back in convincing fashion with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 advantage. The Rams' second dual victory of the spring was clinched by Logan Voeks at the No. 4 position.
Â
On a team dealing with ailments, Voeks has been playing through one all season. Battling back, she posted a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory to ignite the celebration.
Â
"We didn't play our best tennis, but they found a way to get it done," Tran said. "That speaks volumes about their grit and determination."
Â
The Rams will continue their California swing Sunday, playing at coach Mai-Ly Tran's alma mater, Cal State Fullerton. The match begins at 12 p.m. (MT), with a live stream and live scoring available.
