LAS VEGAS – For the first time in two months, the team didn't start competition feeling like its back was already against the wall.
Â
In Wednesday's opening round of the Mountain West Tournament at the Darling Tennis Center, Colorado State coach Mai-Ly Tran was able to fill out a complete lineup for the first time since Feb. 22. It seemingly led to a bolstered attitude approaching the match with Wyoming, though through a series of tight matches, the Cowgirls advanced in the draw with a 4-3 decision clinched in a three-set decision at the No. 3 spot. Colorado State finished the year 4-18.
Â
Wyoming took the initial step to advancing by claiming the doubles point, picking up matching 6-2 victories on the first and third lines. The switch to singles put the Rams back in contention with a series of tightly contested matchups.
Â
The Rams would even surge in front after picking up straight-sets victories from Sarah Weekley, Logan Voeks and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya. Weekley won the final two games to close out her 6-3, 6-4 match at No. 1 over Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia after dropping a three-set decision to her to end the regular season.
Â
Zhadzinskaya held firm in her victory at No. 3 over Elena Trencheva, 7-5, 6-4. While Voeks did win in straight sets at No. 4, it came with a huge reversal in momentum in the second set. Voeks dropped the first three games, then found herself down 5-2 before storming back to take the next five games to close out a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Â
Wyoming, which nabbed its first singles win at No. 6 with Serina Abriola beating Mariya Dobreva 7-5, 6-0, rallied back as Dilnaz Mashabayeva outlasted Diana Lizarazo at No. 5 with a 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory, followed by Violetta Borodina's win over Victoria Erechtchenko, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
