Dembele misses qualification on tiebreaker.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Six members of the Colorado State track and field team geared up on Friday to compete in the NCAA West Regional in College Station, Texas, with spots in the NCAA Championships on the line.
Â
The men's triple jump started the day for CSU, with Ismael Dembele and Jamison Taylor taking the stage. The pair were situated in the third of four flights, with Dembele stepping up to the line first. The Ram junior delivered big on his first attempt with a mark of 15.88 meters/52-feet-1.25 (+3.3), which put himself firmly in the mix for qualification in the early stages.
Â
The solid score came at a cost, however, as Dembele pulled up with an injury that forced him to pass his final two attempts. As the final scores came through, Dembele and Oregon's Safin Wills were deadlocked in 12th position with identical marks. The official tiebreaker, to the misfortune of Dembele, weighs each competitor's second-best attempt, which gave Wills the edge and a ticket to nationals.
Â
For Taylor, he saved his best attempt for last as he jumped 15.60/51-2.25 to finish in 23rd. Other members of the men's Flight Crew competed in the high jump as Ndayiragije Shukurani, Timothy Johnson and Rhys Travis each cleared a height of 2.04m/6-8.25. Shukurani and Johnson each cleared the bar on their first attempts – putting them in a tie for 33rd, while Travis cleared it on his third try to tie for 43rd.
Â
In the final event of the day, Michael Mooney took to the track to compete in the men's 5k. Mooney put forth a 14:35.63 effort, good enough for a 45th-place finish.
Â
Saturday represents the final day of the West Regional with three Rams set to compete in the women's discus. Klaire Kovatch, Makayla Long and Kajsa Borrman look to advance to Eugene, with the event beginning at 12 p.m. MT.
