Team looks to build on season-opening showing

FORT COLLINS – After wrapping up its first tournament of the fall season, Colorado State's women's tennis team prepares to head to Colorado Springs for the annual Bedford Cup tournament hosted by the Air Force Academy.

The tournament will feature five compass draws in singles play, with each competitor guaranteed at least three matches. Doubles competition will consist of one draw, giving each pair a minimum of two matches. Singles will be played in a best-of-three set format, while doubles will be decided in a single set.

The Rams are looking forward to getting more doubles teams on the courts and building chemistry after discovering many promising doubles teams in the first tournament, said coach Mai-Ly Tran. Many lessons were learned, and now that new players have gotten through their first collegiate matches the Rams are ready to focus on consistency and using every opportunity to grow.

"The team's energy is really positive right now. They're excited to compete again, and you can feel a growing sense of connection within the team. The players are pushing each other, supporting each other, and starting to embrace our culture," Tran said. "Heading into the Bedford Cup, there's a good mix of eagerness to prove ourselves and confidence that we're moving in the right direction."

The Bedford Cup marks the Rams' first opportunity to travel as a team this season, giving them the chance to gain more valuable match experience. With just three returning players from last season the Rams are still getting used to their new roster consisting of four freshmen and three transfers.

Tran hopes to use this tournament to continue getting to know the new athletes and how they play. At Air Force, the Rams will face familiar opponents Utah State, Wyoming and the hosts, but will also expand their pool of competition to include conference competitors New Mexico.

Also in attendance will be Colorado, Texas Tech, Idaho State and Idaho. These non-conference competitors will challenge the Rams and invite more early season trials.
