Rams’ Momentum Falls Short at End

Brousseau leads fourth-quarter rally

FORT COLLINS – Stalled on offense, a change at quarterback and a spark in the running game from Lloyd Avant brought some life back to Colorado State in the fourth quarter.

Jackson Brousseau entered at quarterback and engineered a pair of touchdown drives Saturday night at Canvas Stadium, giving the  Rams momentum in the final minute, but a decision to go for the win after a penalty on a made extra point kept UTSA in the lead, ending in a 17-16 final. Colorado State is now 1-2 on the season.

Lloyd Avant re-energized the running game as he came in with Brousseau, rushing 10 times for 96 yards in the contest. His gashing runs, combined with Brousseau going 10-for-12 for 78 yards in the fourth quarter gave Colorado State a chance at the comeback.

After CSU tied the game at 10 after a Tahj Bullock 10-yard run, UTSA answered with a long scoring play as Robert Henry Jr. took a swing pass and skirted the sideline for a 74-yard score – his second explosive score of the night.

Unfazed, the Rams drove again, leading to Brousseau's first career touchdown pass, a 4-yarder to tight end Rocky Beers. After UTSA was flagged when CSU made the extra point, the decision was made to go for 2, but immediate pressure from the Roadrunners forced Bullock to throw wide in the end zone to Avant, the momentum carrying him out of bounds.

The onside kick went out of bounds, and UTSA took a knee to secure the win.

Colorado State did not get off to a quick start offensively, punting the first four drives of the game, the only punch in the first half coming off three explosive plays – two consecutively. A 23-yard run by Avant was followed by a 47-yard strike from Fowler-Nicolosi to Armani Winfield to set up a first-and-goal. But a penalty negated a touchdown, leading to second-and-goal from the 20, and the drive produced a 23-yard field goal by Isaiah Hankins.

Penalties were an issue in the first half, with seven accounting for 85 yards as the Rams finished with 11 for 115 yards; UTSA was flagged nine times for 81 yards.

The Rams defense was stout most of the half, save for one play. On third-and-short, CSU brought run pressure, but Henry found a seam and broke off a 76-yard scoring run. It made it four consecutive weeks the senior back scored on a run of 74 yards or longer. The unit additionally produced two turnovers in the game on interceptions – the first of the season for the Roadrunners -- with Ayden Hector and Robert Edmonson intercepting passes.

Colorado State will host Washington State on Sept. 27 for the State Pride game.
