Team opens conference play next week
FORT COLLINS – An opening drive provided promise, but Colorado State's offensive struggles continued, and Washington State capitalized by scoring 20 consecutive points in the first half, making that advantage stick through the remainder of Saturday night in a 20-3 victory at Canvas Stadium in the State Pride game.
Â
Jackson Brousseau, making the first start of his career, led the Rams to a score on their first possession of the game, a 50-yard field goal by Isaiah Hankins. Afterward, the unit struggled to put together drives, converting just 5-of-13 third-down plays, just 1-of-4 on fourth down as the team slipped to 1-3 on the season.
Â
A fumble ended one promising first-half drive in WSU territory, and the half ended with a missed field goal by CSU.
Â
Washington State carried the 20-3 lead into the break with a balanced attack – 126 yards each rushing and passing – getting a pair of touchdown passes from Zevi Eckhaus and two field goals from Jack Stevens.
Â
Colorado State's defense didn't allow another point in the game, but the Rams couldn't take advantage through a mixture of missing on third down and getting behind the chains as the Cougars produced nine tackles for loss, sacking Brousseau four times. Washington State blocked a third field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter.
Â
Brousseau finished 19-of-28 passing for 188 yards, the most for a CSU quarterback this season.
Â
The Rams open Mountain West play on the road in a quick turnaround, playing at San Diego State on Friday.
