Second round halted by heavy winds

WINDSOR – To Chiara Sola, a slight delay is better than a long one.

The first day of the Colonel Wollenberg Ptamigan Classic was blown to a halt with the majority of the field needing to finish the final two holes of the second round, strong winds more than the slight rain which fell making conditions unplayable. The final hole played at Ptarmigan Country Club was no fun, with balls moving on the green because of the gust which came in with the black clouds overhead.

Trying to set up for a putt is no fun when the ball won't stand still, so play was finally called for the day around 6:15 p.m., on Monday, the plan being to finish those two holes beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, followed by the third round.

Sola experienced it herself, taking it for what it was – a minor hiccup. Waiting a bit overnight is preferable to stepping away from the game for a year due to injury. The reality is she's feeling good, and play will resume after a good night's sleep.

"Honestly, I don't remember any of my shots, I was just so focused on don't lose my scorecard, don't lose my umbrella, because it the wind was so bad," Sola said. "It was a lot of work, it was a lot of don't get angry over silly things, don't waste your energy over stupid things, just keep your things together.

"Play simple and easy, and just finish the hole and go to the next."

She's been waiting for this for a spell. After transferring to Colorado State last year, she played in the first three tournament before an injury took her out for the remainder of the season. It was long road back, and her summer back home in Switzerland was a full-on attempt to be ready.

It takes practice rounds to get the muscle memory back of the swing and the putting stroke. By the end, she felt it was in place, winning her first tournament she played in back home. Returning to the team put new thoughts in her head, ones she had to get settled.

"I've taken the summer at home back in Switzerland to practice a lot, get my swing figured out, just to have it together before I get back here," she said. "I found a lot of pressure, as a senior, the only senior with incoming freshman, I want to keep the team together. I also want to play well myself. So, I've had a lot of thoughts about that in my head, but mostly it's just been fun.

"I mean, we've all had our individual struggles with golf, it's just a hard sport, but I want to do well this semester, I want to have a year that I remember. That's not just score-wise, but also as a person. I hope I can leave this team behind as a good senior."
She's checked that box, considering the amount of blown kisses between her and Inje Suntiwattanapol in the hallway.

The freshman from Thailand said her adjustments have been more with school than the game or her new country. She traveled a lot as a child, so getting homesick wasn't a worry. Going to class has been different.

She finished her schooling back home by taking online classes. Now she's off to early morning lectures with 30,000 other people meandering around campus. The team has helped smooth out any rough ends.

"I'm really close to all of them," she said. "Chiara helps a lot. She gives me a ride to places. I don't have a car. Gabie (Roscar) doesn't have a car. And she's nice.

"But it's fun, all of it, getting to meet like new people, like new perspectives."

New perspectives can help, which Sola has brought to light herself just this season. The pressure she felt to be a solid-scoring member of the team reminded her the pressure she was feeling was a privilege, reemphasizing the playing part should be enjoyable.

If she approaches a round as such, she's likely to post a better score.

"At first I was really struggling with that fun part. I was, 'OK, I just want to get the scores,'" she said. "Now my parents are here -- they flew in from Switzerland -- my roommates came watching, so they don't know anything about golf, but they made the effort to come. So, I'm, 'OK, well actually, it's not that deep; it's a sport, and it's so much fun to have the people I care about around to have that support.

"So, yes, for sure now it's fun. The first few weeks I did struggle a bit with that."

So, the weather was just a thing. Colorado State played fairly solid until the end, with a few Rams struggling when the winds blew in without any real warning. While no scores were official from the second round, six teams in the field did leave the place shooting under par.

Dark clouds are fine. Much better than feeling dark for a long stretch of days.

Sola, for one, knows the difference.
