One of the longest rivalries in the West will be played in 2026

FORT COLLINS – One of the longest rivalries in the West will continue next season as Colorado State and Wyoming are excited to announce that the Border War will be played during the 2026 season. The game is scheduled to be played on Sept. 5 as the season opener for both teams on Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium.

The series also added a game in 2036 in Laramie. The series will be idle in 2027 where both programs currently have full non-conference schedules, but scheduling adjustments are being worked on. The Border War Game is scheduled to resume in 2028 at Canvas Stadium and played until 2036 at campuses.

"Rivalry games are important to us at Colorado State and are a part of what makes College Football so special," said Director of Athletics, John Weber. "Our scheduling goal for our football program is to host seven games every season on campus in Canvas Stadium. Ram Country and Canvas Chaos make a real difference on game day and there is no better place to play than at home on campus in Fort Collins."

Colorado State was originally scheduled to play at Indiana to open the 2026 season but altered schedules to play the Border War Game. With the change, CSU will host seven games at Canvas Stadium for the third-consecutive season.

"Having one of the oldest rivalries in the West that features one of the most iconic trophies in college football continue consecutively is outstanding," added Weber. "The Boot Run with the game ball, the Border Ceremony, and the Bronze Boot Trophy all honor the values and rich ROTC history of both universities and will remain integral to this rivalry for years to come. This game is important to our universities, communities, and fans and I am thrilled that we were able to continue it in 2026."

Heading into this season, the two programs have played 116 times since 1899 and every year since 1946 – 79 consecutive seasons – following World War II. The Border War series is tied for the eighth-longest played in FBS history and is the third-oldest rivalry game west of the Mississippi River (behind Cal-Stanford, 1892, Oregon-Oregon State, 1894, and tied with Arizona-Arizona State, 1899).

Colorado State and Wyoming will face each other for the final time as Mountain West foes this season, playing in Laramie on Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m., MT. CSU is set to move to the Pac-12 starting in 2026.
