Shooting goes cold in the fourth quarter as Rams drop nailbiter
SAN DIEGO — Colorado State women's basketball went toe-to-toe with league-leading San Diego State once again, taking the Aztecs down to the wire before coming up short, 64-61, on Wednesday night at Viejas Arena.
Â
It was a back-and-forth affair as the Rams (18-7, 9-5 MW) and Aztecs (19-4, 13-1 MW) traded blows throughout the third quarter – which featured five of the 13 lead changes on the night. Colorado State led 49-48 entering the final period, but the offense went cold in the fourth (3-of-13 FG) which allowed San Diego State to reclaim the lead.
Â
CSU did not let SDSU pull away, keeping within six points throughout the final 10 minutes. The Rams had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but the Aztec defense forced a Lexus Bargesser 3-point attempt to come up short and seal the game.
Â
Bargesser led Colorado State with 16 points while knocking down 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Brooke Carlson – despite playing just two minutes in the first half due to foul trouble – followed with 15 points. Hannah Ronsiek was sensational defensively for CSU, swiping four steals and playing a part in several other disruptions on that end of the floor. In total, nine of the 10 Rams to see the floor scored points on the night.
Â
How It Happened
The action kicked off with Ronsiek's jumper, putting the Rams on the scoreboard first. San Diego State quickly answered with Naomi Panganiban's jumper, assisted by Bailey Barnhard, leveling the score. Bargesser kept the Rams in the mix with two clutch 3-pointers, maintaining a tight contest throughout the quarter. Even with CSU's defensive efforts, including a block from Bargesser, the Aztecs edged ahead. Nat Martinez's two free throws in the final second gave the home team an 18-16 lead to close the first quarter.
Â
Madelyn Bragg was a force in the paint for the Rams, tying the game at 21 with back-to-back layups early in the second quarter. McKenna Murphy's 3-pointer at 6:38 briefly put the Rams ahead, but Nala Williams quickly responded for the Aztecs, narrowing the margin. The quarter concluded with SDSU holding a slim 30-28 lead after Kaelyn Hamilton's layup.
Â
In a fiercely contested third quarter, Bargesser nailed a 3-pointer at 8:47, giving the Rams a momentary 31-30 lead. SDSU answered with Hamilton's layup and free throw, but Carlson's jumper tied it again at 33. Kloe Froebe's layup reclaimed the lead for CSU at 37-36. With just 1:45 left, SDSU surged ahead 48-45 thanks to Martinez's 3-pointer. However, Jadyn Fife's two free throws at the buzzer put CSU back on top, 49-48, heading into the final quarter.
Â
Hamilton's 3-pointer at 9:30 set the tone for a thrilling back-and-forth fourth quarter, giving SDSU a 51-49 lead. Bargesser answered with a 3-pointer at 7:15, narrowing the Rams' deficit to a single point. Carlson's free throws at 6:19 tied it up at 55-55, but the Aztecs pulled away with Maria Konstantinidou's jumper at 2:35, making it 62-56. Williams extended the lead with a jumper at 0:58, and despite Carlson's late and-1 layup at 0:44, the Rams couldn't close the gap, falling 64-61.
