Singles Play:In singles play, the Rams finished the tournament with a 5-4 record as a team. Senior tennis player Dasha Zhurin started strong for the Rams but could not hold on, losing in the round of 16. Zhurin won her first two matches against Megan Ferriera of Arkansas and Haley McIver of Kansas State. Zhurin defeated Ferriera in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, and then moved on to defeat McIver 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. However, Zhurin fell short in the round of 16 to Yanick Dullens of Denver. Dullins won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to knock Zhurin out of the tournament. Emily Kirchem also won her first round match, defeating Morgan Sall of Colorado 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. Kirchem then lost in the round of 32 to Emily Haylock of Kansas 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Three Ram players competed in the qualifying round. Jasmin Singh won her first round, but then fell short to Maria Ruiz-Febrega in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Carla Pallares and Charity Malone both fell short in their matches.
Doubles Play:In doubles play, Colorado State had two teams compete in the tournament. The team of Jessica Jones and Jasmin Singh defeated Hadley MacFarlane and Nicole Schneider of BYU in the first round 8-5. The duo then went on to lose in the round of 32 to Iva Gersic and Maria Ruiz-Fabriga of New Mexico 8-0. The team of Dasha Zhurin and Emily Kirchem were defeated by Lauren Jones and Rebecca Pike of BYU in the first round 8-5. The Rams finished the tournament with a 1-2 team record.
Looking Ahead:Colorado State will have a break from competition until Jan. 30 when they head to Lincoln, Nebraska, to take on the University of Nebraska. The Rams? first home match will be against Texas Tech of the Big 12. CSU will have six home matches this season. The spring schedule will bring many challenges for the Rams. Coach Jon Messick feels CSU has a strong preconference schedule. He feels if the Rams play well enough they could move into the rankings. The Rams could play up to ten ranked teams in the spring.
