The Accident & Aftermath
On June 20, 2004 Colorado State University assistant volleyball coach Andy Klussmann and his family were in a traffic accident that claimed the life of his wife, Janna. The Klussmann's were traveling with their two young sons, Drew and Jackson, and Andy's mother to celebrate Father's Day and one-year-old Jackson's first birthday with Janna's family.
Andy sustained a closed head injury and severely fractured lower jaw. He was hospitalized in Cheyenne for over two weeks before being transferred to Craig Hospital in Denver. At Craig Andy underwent two months of intensive, inpatient rehabilitation - physical, cognitive, speech, and occupational therapy. He returned home September 10 and continues therapy and rehabilitation in Fort Collins.
The children were not injured and their grandmother was released from the hospital within a week. Andy's step-children (Janna's son and daughter), Seth and Sarah Anderson, were not with the family at the time of the accident.
How You Can Help
The accident has created substantial financial hardship for the Klussmann family - in addition to the portion of Andy's medical expenses not covered by insurance, the family lost over 50% of their income, Andy will likely be on disability pay for a number of months, and the children are in daycare for the first time. A memorial fund has been established for the Klussmann family in Janna's name at First National Bank in Fort Collins. Contributions to the Janna Klussmann Memorial Fund will used to help with the substantial financial hardship caused by the accident.
