Tennis Preview: 2004 MWC Championships

Weekly Recap: The Colorado State women?s tennis team went 0-2 after facing in-state rival Colorado and Mountain West Conference foe BYU. On April 23, the Rams fell to Colorado 6-1, at the Miramont Sport Center. The following day, CSU fell to the No. 20 ranked BYU Cougars, 6-1, at the Moby Complex tennis courts. The Rams move to 11-11 on the season and 3-4 in Mountain West Conference play. Colorado State will hold the No. 5 position at the MWC Championships in San Diego, Calif., April 29-May 4. The No. 28 University of New Mexico squad finished with a perfect 7-0 record in league play to earn its first MWC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed. No. 21 BYU earned the No. 2 seed with a 6-1 record in conference play, while the third-seed went to 55th-ranked UNLV which finished 5-2 in MWC play. The No. 69 San Diego Aztecs finished 4-3 in conference play and will hold the No. 4 position. Air Force, Utah, and Wyoming finished with identical 1-6 records in conference play, and based on the MWC tie-breaking procedure, the Cowgirls claimed the sixth seed, while the Utes earned the seventh seed and the Falcons the No. 8 seed. The Rams will face No. 69 ranked San Diego State in the first round on April 29 starting at 2:00 p.m. Colorado State will then play the winner or loser of the New Mexico vs. Air Force match on Friday, April 30, at 2:00 p.m.

Colorado: The Rams fell to in-state rival Colorado at the Miramont Sport Center by a score of 6-1. The Rams are now 0-11 all-time against the Buffs. The Rams? only win of the match came at the No.5 singles position where Tatyana Ugorich defeated Morgan Sall 8-6. Ugorich is now 13-7 in dual matches this season. The Rams had two matches go to a third set and another go to a tie breaker, only to lose all three. In doubles action the Rams suffered losses in all three matches in the loss. The closest match for CSU came at the No. 1 position where the duo of Dasha Zhurin and Emily Kirchem fell to the team of Sall/Strandemo, 8-6.

BYU: The Colorado State Rams suffered a 6-1 loss to MWC foe Brigham Young at the Moby Complex Tennis Courts. With the loss the Rams? moved to 3-4 in conference play and will hold the No. 5 position at the MWC Championships. The Rams are now 0-7 all-time against the Cougars. The Rams only win came at the No. 2 singles spot, where freshman Emily Kirchem defeated Sofia Holden 6-3, 6-3 to earn her 15th dual match win on the season. The Rams suffered three losses in doubles, but the duo of Alexandra Paganetti and Tatyana Ugorich lost in a hard-fought match to the team of Pike/Oswald, 9-8 (6).

2004 MWC Championships: The 2004 Mountain West Conference Women?s Tennis Championships will take place at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. San Diego State will host the first-ever combined tennis championship of both men and women. The opening day matches will see 2nd-seeded BYU taking on No. 7 seed Utah, and No. 3 seed UNLV vs. No. 6 seed Wyoming at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, followed by 4th-seed San Diego State vs. No. 5 seed Colorado State and top-seeded New Mexico vs. 8th-seeded Air Force at 2 p.m. The Championship matches will be on Saturday, May 1, with the winners receiving automatic bids into the 2004 NCAA Tennis Championships.

San Diego State: San Diego State ends the regular season with an 8-14 overall record and 4-3 in Mountain West Conference play. The Aztecs are the defending MWC champions and will host the tournament. The Rams are 0-9 all-time against SDSU, and fell to the Aztecs this year in MWC play 6-1, in San Diego, California. The Aztecs are coming off a 5-2 loss to the University of San Diego (9-8).
