Women's Tennis Completes 2003-2004 Season

Weekly Recap... The Colorado State women?s tennis team completed the 2003-2004 season at the Mountain West Conference Championships in San Diego, California, on April 29-May 1. The Rams defeated the University of Utah 4-2, on May 1, to earn fifth place and win the consolation bracket. In the first round of play CSU fell to No. 69 ranked Aztecs of San Diego State 4-1. The loss moved the Rams into the consolation side of the bracket where Colorado State faced and defeated Air Force 4-1. Colorado State finishes the season with a 13-12 overall record and 3-4 in MWC play. This is the first winning season for the Rams since 2001. No members of the 2004 squad were on the 2001 team.

San Diego State... The Colorado State women?s tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 69 San Diego State in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championship on Thursday, April 29, in San Diego, California. The Rams kept the match close the entire way before being overcome by the Aztecs. The only point for Colorado State came at the No. 5 singles spot where Tatyana Ugorich defeated Patricia Graf 6-4, 6-0. Ugorich also won her doubles match earlier in the day when she paired up with Alexandra Paganetti to knock off the duo of Graf and Sarah Sansom 9-7. The loss forced the Rams to the consolation bracket to face Air Force.

Air Force... The Colorado State women?s tennis team defeated Air Force 4-1 Friday, April 30, in San Diego, California. The Rams opened up the day?s competition winning at the No. 3 doubles spot 8-2. In that match, Alexandra Paganetti and Tatyana Ugorich tallied their 11th win of the season. Air Force won the other two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Ugorich also won at the No. 5 singles position to clinch the match for the Rams. Ugorich defeated Katie Tomkie 6-3, 6-4. Charity Malone made quick work of Gina Black at the No. 4 singles position defeating her 6-3, 6-0. Carla Pallares wasn?t far behind Malone. Pallares defeated Karissa Walker 6-3, 6-1. Jessica Jones was the next Ram to finish her singles match. Jones won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot over Kelly Morgan.

Utah... The Colorado State women?s tennis team defeated Utah 4-2 Saturday, May 1, to win the consolation bracket of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Tournament. This is the second straight year the Rams have taken fifth place and done so by defeating Utah. Last year the Rams defeated the Utes 4-1 to earn the fifth spot. The Rams started the day by winning 8-0 at No. 3 doubles and 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, earning the doubles point. The duo of Tatyana Ugorich and Alexandra Paganetti finished the season 8-2 against all conference opponents. Carla Pallares and Jasmin Singh defeated Cinthia Saucedo and Jessica Watts 8-6 to clinch the doubles point. Utah tied the score at one point each when Sheri Esrock knocked off Dasha Zhurin 6-2, 6-2. Colorado State?s Jessica Jones then defeated Jenessa Jackson 6-0, 6-1 only to have Utah?s Watts tie the score at 2-2 after beating the Rams? Ugorich 6-2, 7-5. Colorado State then clinched the team win after coming up with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot by Charity Malone over Rachel Alder and a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 3 position by Pallares over Saucedo.

Looking Ahead... The Colorado State women?s tennis team completes the 2003-2004 season with a fifth place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championships in San Diego, California. The Rams finished the season with a 13-12 overall record and 3-4 in MWC play. This marked the first winning season for CSU since 2001 when the Rams finished 13-12. Colorado State will return all players from this year?s squad, and will have outstanding senior leadership in the likes of Dasha Zhurin, Alexandra Paganetti, and Tatyana Ugorich. After a year under her belt, Emily Kirchem will also look to improve on her impressive 23-9 record as a freshman at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Other Ram players like Jessica Jones, Carla Pallares, Charity Malone, and Jasmin Singh will also play huge roles in the success for the Rams in the 2004-2005 season.

Kirchem Earns All-Conference Team... Colorado State freshman Emily Kirchem was named to the MWC All-Conference Team on Wednesday, capping an outstanding first season on the court for the Rams. Kirchem, a 5-4 freshman from Fairview, Ore., led the Rams in singles wins with 22 in her first season, and heading into the conference tournament had won 15 of her last 20 matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. She was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week on March 31 for her 2-0 singles performance in Colorado State?s 5-2 and 7-0 wins over Wyoming and BYU, respectively. Kirchem was the only Ram named to the 12-player team, which include three players from both BYU and New Mexico, two players from San Diego State and UNLV, and one player from Air Force.
