Casey Malone, a former NCAA discus champion while competing at Colorado State University, earned a berth on the United States track and field team by finishing third in that event at the Olympic trials in Sacramento, Calif.

Malone unleashed his best mark, 211-feet, 6-inches, on his first attempt. He eventually finished third behind Jarred Rome (215-9) and Ian Waltz (212-3).

Another former CSU All-American, Brian Trainor, finished 10th, 187-7.

Malone will accompany the U.S. team later this summer for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Malone was an All-American at Colorado State and won the discus competition in the 1998 NCAA Track and Field Championships, the first individual track titlist in school history.
