Benton Fourth, Rams Eighth at Las Vegas Founders Showdown

Las Vegas, Nev. - The Colorado State women's golf team completed the first round of play at the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown at the Anthem Country Club Monday afternoon. The team is currently sitting in eighth place after 18 holes with a score of 295 (+7). UCLA is in first place after the first day of the tournament with Colorado State just 16 strokes behind.
Chelsea Benton fired a three-under-par 69 today and is currently sitting in fourth place. Benton's score is the lowest single-round score for the Rams this season and ranks as a tie for the fourth-best round in school history. Her four birdies for the day puts her only two strokes behind the tournament leader, Da Sol Chung of UNLV. <>"I was really happy with the way I played today," commented Benton after the first round. "I putted very well and stayed in the present well. We are all looking forward to getting out there again and improving in tomorrow's round."
Coming in next for the Rams was freshman Kelly Brotherton. Brotherton shot a two-over-par 74 and is tied for 33rd after 18 holes. Only one stroke behind Brotherton was Amber Ward who finished the day with a 75 (+3) and a tie for 38th place. Megan Chapman was next on the leaderboard for the Rams with a 77 (+5) and is currently tied for 53rd place. Rounding out the roster for the Rams is Stefanie Ferguson who shot an 83 in the first round and is tied for 75th place.
"I thought the team played very well for their first time at the UNLV tournament," said head coach Angie Hopkins. "It's a tough course and we fought hard today. We look forward to playing in tomorrow's round."
