The second day of the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown proved to be a record-breaking day for Colorado State University sophomore Chelsea Benton. Benton is sitting in first place after shooting a five-under-par 67 in round two Tuesday. Her score of 67 is the best single round score in Colorado State history. Chelsea recorded five birdies on the challenging course to secure the top spot and is three strokes in front of the rest of the field going into the final round.
"Chelsea played great," commented head coach Angie Hopkins. "She had the best round in school history today. It was well earned and well deserved. She had struggled earlier in the year but has worked really hard and is achieving her goals now."
Despite the outstanding play of Chelsea Benton, the team dropped from eighth to tenth place today with UCLA holding on to first in the team standings.
Coming in behind Benton for the Rams was Megan Chapman. Chapman improved on her score from yesterday to shoot a 76 (+4) in the second round and she is currently tied for 53rd place. Kelly Brotherton is tied for 57th place after firing an 80 (+8) today. Amber Ward and Stefanie Ferguson round out the standings for the Rams shooting an 82 and 81, respectively.
The Rams will play the third and final round of the tournament tomorrow. Live scoring can be found throughout the day at www.golfstat.com.
