The Colorado State women's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season and improved to 6-5 with a 63-59 victory over host Texas-San Antonio (5-6) to close out the Wells Fargo New Year's Classic.
The Rams jumped out to an early lead thanks to some sharp shooting from beyond the three-point line. The Rams shot an outstanding 80 percent (8-for-10) from long range in the first half as sophomore Sara Hunter and senior Vanessa Espinoza each connected on 3-of-4 from long range to give the Rams a 20 point advantage, 40-20 at the half.
The Rams defense forced the Roadrunners to shoot a dismal 23.7 percent (9-of-38 FGs) from the floor in the game's opening frame.
The second half was a reversal of fortunes for the Rams as foul trouble forced Melissa Dennett, who recorded two blocks in the first half, to sit for much of the second half and UTSA climbed back into the game, cutting the Rams lead to just three points with 1:01 left in the game.
Hunter, who finished with 16 points and five rebounds, hit a baseline jumper with 29 seconds left to push the Rams lead back to five points and Espinoza sealed the victory from the free throw line, making three of four free throws in the games final 19 seconds.
Espinoza finished the game with 12 points, four rebounds and five assists. Senior Lindsay Thomas also scored in double figures for the Rams, posting 13 points and eight rebounds. Dennett finished with six points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Next up, the Rams will open up Mountain West Conference action at home against San Diego State on Jan. 5.
