Despite a strong start that saw the Colorado State women's basketball team lead by as many as 12 points in the first half, the Rams fell to the Denver Pioneers 77-58 at Magness Arena on Wednesday night.
The Rams seemed to take control of the game early, racing out to a 16-6 lead midway through the first half. However, the Pioneers steadily cut into the Rams' lead and Colorado State led by just one point, 26-25 at halftime.
However, Denver was just too strong in the second half and came out shooting 61.3 percent versus 37.9 percent shooting for the Rams in the second half to put the game out of Colorado State's reach.
The Pioneers quickly set the tone after halftime and took their first lead of the game 28-26 just 18 second out of the locker room. Down eight points, 48-40 with 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Rams gave up an 18-2 run which put the game away with 3:56 remaining in the game.
The Rams shooting struggles from long range also returned against the Pioneers as they began the game 0-for-7 and did not make a trey until the 3:16 mark in the second half but finished the game 3-for-10 from beyond the arc.
"I told our players, `if it's constructive, chew on it; if it's not, spit it out," said head coach Jen Warden.
The Rams (4-2) will look to bounce back from the loss on the road at San Jose State on Saturday Dec. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. MT from San Jose, Calif.
