Colorado State University's athletics department and the City of Fort Collins Parks and Recreation Department today announced a partnership aimed at providing the youth in the community an opportunity to see Rams' sport teams in action.
"We have enjoyed a great relationship with Parks and Recreation throughout the years," said Christine Susemihl, CSU's interim director of athletics. "It is a valuable way for our department, including our coaches and student-athletes, to be able to give back to the community. This is also a method for us to provide the youth in Fort Collins an opportunity to see our programs compete."
Under the partnership announced today, individuals competing in specific Parks and Recreation programs will receive a free ticket to selected athletic events when accompanied by a paying adult. Vouchers for the events will be distributed through CSU and the city to the events.
The athletic department will also be involved during the city's distribution of football equipment in August, with student-athletes on hand to visit with youth players, and an appearance by the Cam the Ram mascot.
During the 2006 football season, a youth football "play of the week" will be featured during CSU's home games on the videoboard at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.
During the winter months, selected youth teams will play a shortened game during halftime of selected men's and women's basketball contests.
"The value of athletics lies in helping competitors, fans, families and friends learn about the importance of teamwork, goal-setting, and sportsmanship. This partnership provides an opportunity for the youth in Fort Collins to compete and to also be able to attend our events. We are excited about the continued relationship we have developed through the years with Parks and Recreation," said Susemihl.
