Auburn, Wash. - CSU sophomore Chelsea Benton fired a five-over 77 on the first day of the NCAA Women's Golf West Regional Thursday putting her in a tie for 45th place with two rounds to play in the 108-player field.
Benton carded two birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys on the day to account for her five-over-par. Benton went out with a two-over after nine holes but was penalized a stroke for slow play on her 11th hole, giving her a three-over on her final nine holes of the day.
"Chelsea played really well today", commented CSU head coach Angie Hopkins. "She had a couple holes that she struggled with but she is really rolling the ball well. She left a lot of birdies out there today but tomorrow is a whole new day."
Paige Mackenzie of Washington leads the tournament individually with a first round total of a four-under 68. Washington and UCLA lead the team scoring after round one carding even-par 288s on Thursday.
Play continues at the Washington National Golf Club with the second round on Friday.
