Colorado State University football coach Sonny Lubick told more than 200 fans gathered at a local luncheon Thursday that he expects his 2006 team to be exciting.

Lubick, along with volleyball coach Tom Hilbert and cross country coach Bryan Berryhill provided previews of their respective 2006 teams and seasons during the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce's third annual kickoff luncheon at the Fort Collins Hilton.

"We have a chance to be a good football team," Lubick told the crowd. "We're making progress, and I think people will be proud of us."

"I like this team and its leadership, and I love being around this group."

Lubick put the Rams through a two-hour workout Thursday morning as the Rams completed their first week of preseason workouts. The team will practice twice Friday, at 9 a.m., and 4 p.m., and Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

The Rams held a live goal-line scrimmage to conclude Thursday's workout, and Lubick said his team will have a situational scrimmage Saturday morning.

"I thought the offense looked pretty good during goal-line," Lubick said. "Overall, it was a good practice."

Football opens the 2006 season Sept. 2, playing host to Weber State. Kickoff is 3 p.m. at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.

Volleyball opens the 2006 season Aug. 25, hosting the Hilton Classic, in which Missouri State, Morgan State and Texas A&M will also compete. The first match with Missouri State and Morgan State will be at 5:00 p.m. with the Rams and Aggies following at 7:00 p.m.

The cross country team begins its season on Sept. 1 at the Wyoming Invitational in Laramie.

CSU athletic department officials also said that for Saturday's scrimmage on the practice field south of Moby Arena that strollers, dogs, bikes, and chairs are not allowed inside the fenced area of the facility for safety protection.
