Despite some great performances by the Colorado State track & field team, the Rams could not overcome the depth of the BYU teams, finishing second at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.

 

Senior Kevin Johnson earned the high point award for the Mountain West Championship, earning his second straight award after also earning the honor at last season's outdoor championship. Johnson also won the Outstanding Performance Award for his record-breaking performance in the heptathlon. Johnson posted a personal best 8.04 in the 60 meter hurdles to win his second title of the championship. He also won the heptathlon title, finished sixth in the long jump and placed 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 47-3.5. Johnson's 8.04 is the fourth fastest time in Colorado State history and the fastest time in the Mountain West this season.

 

Junior Drew Morano broke the Colorado State school record en route to a Mountain West title in the 400 meters, running a 46.74, leading the race from wire to wire. He breaks the old record of 46.95 held by Deontrey Taylor and also provisionally qualifies for the NCAA Championship. Also placing in the top eight in the 400 meters was freshman Cole Tucker in 7th with a personal best time of 48.70 and sophomore Kyle Keeler in eighth after running a 49.01. Morano then came back to run a personal best 21.15 to finish second in the 200 meters behind Air Force's Travis Piccou. Morano's 21.15 is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Senior Denny Majerus finished seventh in 22.24, wihle freshman Sulaiman Sayyid was eighth in 22.32.

 

The day began with the women's high jump at 10:30. Freshman Sonni Russell surprised the crowd, finishing second after clearing a personal best 5-8.75. On Thursday, she posted a then personal best 5-7.25 in the high jump and came into the Mountian West Championships with a best of 5-5. Senior Rae Backes cleared 5-5, while senior Katie Lloyd, junior Emily Pearson and freshman Kristen Kugler all cleared 5-3.

 

Senior Janay DeLoach finished second in the 60 meters for the third straight season, posting a time of 7.42 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships, while freshman Tanesha Johnson finished sixth with a personal best time of 7.62, which is also the third best time in CSU history. DeLoach also placed seventh in the 200 meters, running a 24.79. Senior Nicole Feest finished fourth in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:03.63, while teammate April Thomas was fifth after clocking a 10:03.99 and sophomore Kristen Hemphill was eighth in 10:22.00. Freshman Tanesha Johnson posted the second-best triple jump in school history to finish sixth with a leap of 39-8.

 

The men's 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Tucker, freshman Tim Sterrenberg, sophomore Kyle Keeler and Morano ran a 3:13.96 to finish second overall and miss the school record by just 0.14. The women's 4x400 team of senior Megan Fox, freshman Tanesha Johnson, junior Niomi Ridge and junior Emily Pearson won the first heat and finished with a 3:47.25, breaking the school record of 3:49.10 from last season's championship and finishing fifth overall.

 

Junior Magnus Lohse also won a conference title for the Rams, throwing 58-8.5 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Senior Trey Eder finished fourth, while sophomore Alex Godell was seventh and freshman Tyson Williams was eighth.

 

Sophomore Rashaun Greer also finished seventh in the hurdles with a time of 8.32. Sophomore Ryan Billups finshed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 46-6, while freshman Ryan Friese placed eighth with a leap of 45-9.25. In the 3000 meters, Rob Watson finished third, running an 8:26.07. In the mile, Scott Sanders finished fourth with a time of 4:19.01, while Jeff Wahl was eighth with a time of 4:4:24.81. Sayyid posted a 6.91 to finish fifth overall in the men's 60 meters. In the 800 meters, junior Steve Swartz finished seventh in 1:54.02, while Sanders was ninth in 1:57.14.

 

Lloyd, after finishing sixth in the high jump came back to finish seventh in the hurdles with a time of 8.75. She also finished sixth yesterday in the long jump and won the pentathlon to score 17.5 points for the team. In the mile, Kirsten Anthony finished fourth with a time of 5:00.45, while Hemphill was fifth in 5:01.56 and junior Heather Loseke was seventh in 5:03.56. In the women's shot put, freshman Jennifer Ugochukwu finished fourth overall with a toss of 45-8.5, while senior Haley Hunt was ninth at 43-4.5.

 

Several athletes will compete next week in a Last Chance Qualifying Meet, hosted by the University of Notre Dame and will await word on advancement to the NCAA Championship, which will take place March 9-10 at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
