Late Home Runs Lead the Rams to Victory

The Colorado State softball team won the first game of the home series against the BYU Cougars today. The Rams rallied for six runs in the last two innings to end BYU's 16 game win streak. The Rams are now 27-26 (6-8 MWC).
The Cougars grabbed the first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Cortney Nix-Clark gave the Cougars the lead when she hit a double to right center to score Stephanie Platt from third base and Angeline Quiocho from second. The Cougars added to that lead in the top of the sixth when Jodi Norton and Emi Snow hit back-to-back doubles. Snow scored on a fielding error by freshman short stop Robyn Mask.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rams rallied to tie the game, 4-4. Junior Lauren Cusick led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when senior Stacey Leigh walked with two outs. Junior Julia Kloppe stepped to the plate and launched a home run over the right field fence, her seventh of the season, to give the Rams their first three runs of the game. Freshman Rebecca Penland followed Kloppe with a double to right center and scored on a fielding error by BYU's Norton.
With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Allison Majam doubled down the right field line with two outs. Freshman Ashley Munoz followed Majam, hitting a walk-off home run to right field with a full count to win the game for the Rams. Munoz's home run was her 11th of the season, tying senior Brittany Huerta for the team lead.
Senior Jessica Strickland pitched a complete game for Colorado State, walking one batter while striking out seven.
The Rams face BYU again at 12 p.m. tomorrow at Ram Field. Seniors Strickland, Leigh and Huerta will be honored prior to the contest.
