LARAMIE, Wyo. -Marcus Walker won the battle of the top scorers in the Mountain West with 26 points but the Wyoming Cowboys took the Border War, 73-58, Saturday afternoon at the Arena-Auditorium in front of 6,024. CSU has now lost 14 consecutive road games.
Despite opening the game with a seven-point advantage, the Rams (6-13, 0-5) trailed 33-23 going to the halftime locker room after a 15-4 run by the Cowboys over the final 7 minutes of the half. Wyoming faltered in the second half as well but again put together a 12-0 run late in the game to take the win.
With the rest of the Rams struggling, Walker was the shining point.
"Marcus continues to be a guy we can count on for scoring," said Head Coach Tim Miles. "It is something we desperately need right now. He cares about winning and about the team. He knows what the team needs and plays accordingly.
"I have to credit Adam Nigon for making a full effort. He has floor burns in crazy places, gets knocked in the nose and gets back up to keep playing. I felt like all of our freshmen really struggled tonight. They are good guys but they are really questioning themselves."
The Cowboys were led by Travis Nelson off the bench with 16 points while the league's No. 2 scorer, Brandon Ewing, kept pace with Walker to finish with 19 points. Ewing was held 20 minutes of clock without a basket from the field but hit some shots late in the game. Joseph Taylor (14) and Brad Jones (11) rounded out the double-figure scorers for Wyoming. Taylor led all rebounders with 10.
Willis Gardner was the only other Ram in double figures, with 10 points. Ronnie Aguilar finished the night with a team-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Nigon also had eight boards to go along with his four points and two assists.
The Rams will return to the friendly confines of Moby Arena Tuesday night against San Diego State at 7 p.m.
