FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Colorado State women's tennis team will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., Saturday and El Paso, Texas, Sunday to compete against New Mexico State and the University of Texas at El Paso, respectively.
With the past couple weeks off, the Rams have had plenty of time to practice and fine-tune what they learned in their first weekend of play.
"We've had some good practices and gotten some good things done," said Head Coach Jon Messick. "We're ready to play."
The Rams will be competing outdoors for the first time this season at both venues. The team has continued to practice indoors while in Fort Collins as it awaits warmer temperatures. The squad will be heading down a day earlier than usual to get in two days of practice and become acclimated with playing outdoors once again.
The Aggies of New Mexico State bring a 6-2 record into the match against the Rams, with their only loss coming against ranked opponents in UNLV and New Mexico. The Rams and Aggies have an interesting history. Dating back to the 1999-2000 season, when both teams were members of the WAC, each time CSU plays NMSU in Fort Collins, Colo., the Rams have earned a win. However, when the Rams play the Aggies on the road, CSU has yet to earn a win, a streak the team hopes to break Saturday.
The Miners of UTEP are off to a 5-1 record, the third-best start in team history. After suffering their only loss of the season on Feb. 7, the Miners are coming off two consecutive wins, in which the team swept both opponents. While the Rams did not face UTEP last season, they did play the Miners in the two previous seasons. In the 2005-06 season, CSU picked up a 5-2 victory in El Paso. During 2004-05, the Rams won at home, 5-2.
