LARAMIE, Wyo. - Sophomore forward Juanise Cornell tallied a team-most 12 points while junior forward Amaka Uzomah added a game-high 11 rebounds, but the No. 24-ranked Wyoming Cowgirls (23-4, 11-3 MWC) defeated the Rams (2-24, 0-13 MWC), 68-46, behind outstanding offensive performances from their experienced front court on Wednesday night at the Arena-Auditorium.
Wyoming senior forwards Justyna Podziemska and Hanna Zavecz tallied 19 points and 14 points, respectively. Sophomore guard Aubrey Vandiver added 17 points to push the Cowgirls past the Rams, while the rest of the Wyoming squad combined for just 18 points.
"I think our team worked their tails off tonight," said Head Coach Jen Warden. "We had a lot of freshman and sophomores going against juniors and seniors and we never quit. We got better and better as the game went on and I think that's a testament to our character and work ethic and that is reflected in the rebounding numbers."
The Rams featured a more balanced scoring attack and outrebounded the Cowgirls by a 38-28 margin. Cornell's 12 points marked her first double-digit scoring game since facing the Cowgirls at Moby Arena on Jan. 26. She also added six rebounds in 34 minutes of action. Uzomah chipped in with eight points on top of her 11 rebounds, her fifth consecutive game with double-digit rebounds.
"I put a lot of pressure on myself to become more of a scorer," said Cornell of her offensive performance. "I just relaxed in the second half and let the game open up and the shots started to fall."
Sophomore guard Emily Neal also provided a spark for the Rams, tallying nine points, all in the second half, to go along with four rebounds and freshman forward Elle Queen, recorded six points and seven rebounds.
The Cowgirls jumped out to 7-2 lead to open the game, and after three consecutive possessions with 3-pointers - two from Vandiver and one from Podziemska - the Rams trailed by 25-8 midway through the first half. The Cowgirls forced 13 first-half turnovers and took a 32-14 lead into halftime.
The Rams struggled offensively to begin the second half, and Wyoming pushed its lead to its highest point, 48-18 with 15 minutes left in the contest.
Neal (nine points) and Cornell (eight points) responded combining for 17 of the Rams' 20 points from the 15:51 mark to the 6:13 mark to keep the Rams in the game. However, Colorado State was unable to make a significant dent in the Cowgirl's lead until closing the game on a 10-2 run.
The Rams return to the court Saturday night at Moby Arena when they host the San Diego State Aztecs. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
