FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State softball team split a doubleheader with the BYU Cougars Thursday at Ram Field. The Rams won the first game, 3-2, and lost the second game, 11-6. Colorado State is now 27-22 overall on the season and 7-11 in MWC play.
Allison Majam's no-out, three-run shot to right field gave the Rams the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the first game, and that hit was enough to secure the victory for Colorado State.
Majam finished the day 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs. She recorded her fourth and fifth RBI of the day on a single down the left field line in the sixth inning of Game 2 to plate junior Kim Klabough and sophomore Robyn Mask, and cut the BYU lead to 8-6. Both Klabough and Mask singled through the right side earlier in the inning.
Senior Cayte Billman started the first game in the circle for the Rams and pitched a complete game. She gave up one earned run while striking out three BYU batters.
Sophomore Rebecca Penland started the second game for the Rams and pitched 1.1 innings before being relieved by Klabough. Klabough threw five innings and was relieved in the top of the seventh by Billman, who recorded the final two outs.
Senior Lauren Cusick continues to build her home run lead in the MWC after blasting her 19th home run, a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the first inning in Game 2.
The Rams return to Ram Field Friday for a game against the Utah Utes at 3 p.m. MT. Senior Day is Saturday for Billman, Cusick and Julia Kloppe, when the Rams host Utah for a 12 p.m. MT first pitch.
