Late rally not enough as Mustangs beat Rams

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team (16-17) fell to Cal Poly (18-6) 2-1 on the final day of the Capital Classic Sunday.
The Rams were down 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh when junior Rebecca Penland singled up the middle with one out. Freshman Amilia Stephens pinch ran for Penland and scored when junior Robyn Mask reached on a fielding error by the Cal Poly pitcher.
The Mustangs, who received votes in each of this week’s national polls, recorded the final out and held on to post the 2-1 victory.
Freshman Kelli Eubanks started in the circle for the Rams and threw all seven innings. She allowed two runs while striking out five batters.
Colorado State returns to Fort Collins on Saturday for its spring home debut, a doubleheader with in-state rival Northern Colorado. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. MDT.
