PROVO, Utah - - The Colorado State women's tennis teamed opened up conference play against No. 53 BYU. Despite a strong effort, the Rams could not hold onto its first conference win.
"I was overall pleased with the effort of the team and we actually had a couple of leads at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles," said Head Coach Jon Messick. "At one through four singles - we had our chances. We thought we played at a high level and we worked our way into the match."
"The scores don't really show how close the matches really were," said Messick. "We were given game points but were not able to close them out. We played well to give ourselves a chance; we just didn't get the breaks we needed."
In doubles, the Cougars swept all three spots, entering into singles play with a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
In singles, true freshman and native of Utah, Tori Arneson, proved her herself as a strong and aggressive Division I competitor at the No. 3 position. Arneson battled it out with Chie Hayaska for three solid sets, taking the first set 6 - 4. After two solid back and forth sets, Arenson was defeated by Hayaska, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
At the No. 4 position Greer Satherlie had a chance to earn the Rams its first point of the match. Satherlie stepped up her game against Megan Price but was defeated in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Satherlie and Price intensely fought through a see-saw match for every point.
The Rams continue conference play traveling to Salt Lake City Friday where they will compete against No. 44 Utah. The match begins at 1 p.m. MST.
