FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Despite a solid free throw percentage on the night, costly turnovers throughout the game were the deciding factor Friday night at Moby Arena, as the Rams lost to Northern Iowa, 74-50.
The Panthers (1-0) opened the game with back-to-back layups, and never relinquished the lead. By the time the Rams (0-1) scored their first points, they had already committed three turnovers. By the end of the game, CSU had notched 27 turnovers.
"It was a bad sign when we had four turnovers in the beginning," Head Coach Kristen Holt said. "It's a problem we have to take care of."
The Rams, however, went to the free throw line ten more times than the Panthers, and notched a free throw percentage of 80 percent (24-30).
"Getting to the line 30 times is a good thing," said Holt. "We had spurts where I thought we did good things."
CSU juniors Chatilla van Grinsven and Kim Mestdagh both recorded double-digit finishes, with 16 and 12 points, respectively, on the night. Mestdagh also pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double. The team, however, only shot 25.0 percent, hitting only 12 of 48 shots.
"We weren't able to get a lot of shots up, and bad shooting isn't going to help," Mestdagh said. "We need to take this to the next game and make better decisions."
Coach Holt praised van Grinsven for her defense and hard work on the inside after pulling down seven rebounds and snatching two steals.
"Our defense was much better than last week," said Holt. "Chatilla made some things happen for us defensively."
The Rams will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., next week to take on the Florida State Seminoles.
