LINCOLN, Neb. – In a valiant effort against a tough opponent Friday, the Colorado State tennis team lost its fourth consecutive match, to No. 49 Nebraska, 6-1, at the Nebraska Tennis Center.

The Cornhuskers (10-0, 0-0 Big 12) clinched the victory over the Rams (3-5, 0-0 Mountain West) at the No.3 singles position when Caitlin Fluegge fell in two sets to German freshman Stefanie Weinstein, 6-1, 6-2.

“This was probably one of the best, if not the best team we will face all season,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “The score did not indicate the match. I think it was our best doubles performance of the year, even though we were swept. I thought we were really doing some good things out there, and I thought everyone went out there in doubles and played like we wanted to. It was a very competitive performance even though we lost.”

For the fifth consecutive match, CSU was defeated by the opposition for the doubles point. However, the Rams managed to give the Cornhuskers a battle at all three positions. Laura Neal and Fluegge fell at No. 1 to Madeleine Geibert and Weinstein, 8-4, and Nebraska captured the doubles point at No. 2 after Wiveca Swarting and Janine Weinreich defeated Tori Arneson and Melissa Holzinger, 8-3. Jennifer Holmberg and Abby Buxton struggled against the Rams’ Lauren Mulhern and Veronika Wojakowska at No.3, but overcame the CSU pair in a 9-7 victory.

Arneson began singles competition with a two-set loss to Swarting, who is 9-1 this dual season, at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1.

Then Nebraska put the Rams down in the team score 3-0, when Holmberg earned her 10th singles win this season, against Wojakowska, 6-2, 6-3.

After clinching the team victory at the No. 3 position, the Cornhuskers looked for their fourth consecutive sweep over an opponent. Laura Neal fought hard against Geibert at No. 1, sending the match into a pro set, but falling, 6-3, 6-7, 1-0. Next, Mulhern lost her second match this spring, to Weinreich, 6-1, 7-5.

But Holzinger ended Nebraska’s bid for a fifth straight sweep at No.6, defeating Buxton in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), and then in a 6-2 second-set win. The victory also ended a two-match slump for Holzinger.

Saturday, the Rams will look to bounce back against No. 42 Tulsa at the Nebraska Tennis Center. First serve will take place at 10 a.m. MT.
