COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior Melissa Holzinger earned her 11th victory of the season and her first win playing at the No. 4 singles position Sunday, but it was not enough as the Colorado State tennis team lost its third match of the weekend to the Air Force Falcons, 5-2.
Holzinger defeated her opponent, Christine Molina, in two sets, 6-4, 6-1, to deny Air Force (14-8, 2-3 Mountain West) the sweep over CSU (6-11, 1-4 MWC).
"We got outplayed today," Head Coach Jon Messick said. "Give Air Force credit; they outplayed us, executed better, and got the points they needed. They just did everything better than us today. We just were not ready to compete today for some reason."
Veronika Wojakowska gave the Rams their second point of the afternoon at the No. 6 position. Wojakowska, who was moved from her usual No. 4 singles position, defeated Sarah Cassman in a close three-setter, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Air Force began the matchup earning the doubles point at all three positions. Laura Neal and Tori Arneson fell at the No. 1 position to Christina Monreal and Hannah Dake, 8-5. Caitlin Fluegge and Lauren Mulhern gave a valiant effort at No. 2, but lost in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (2), to Molina and Allie Chermel. Then Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke completed the sweep in doubles with their win over Holzinger and Wojakowska, 8-1.
CSU began singles competition for the third time this weekend down 1-0 in the team score. Monreal put the Falcons up 2-0 with her victory over Neal, 6-3, 6-1, No. 1.
Arneson fell at No. 2, in a tight two-setter that came down to a tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to Smoke.
At No. 3, Fluegge, for the second consecutive match, fought in a three-set match but lost to Dake, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The Falcons earned their fifth point at No. 5 when Cecil defeated Mulhern, 6-3, 6-4.
The Rams return to action Thursday as they travel to San Diego, Calif., to face San Diego State and UNLV on Friday.
