LAS CRUCES, N.M.- The Colorado State women's golf team jumped two spots to third place with a 287 at the 16-team Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate at the University of New Mexico Golf Course. The Rams' putting ability is a major contributor to their success thus far.
"Our team is putting extremely well on these greens," said Head Coach Angie Collier. "In the last two days we are averaging 30 putts per round as a team."
After carding a two-round total of 581 the Rams are only trailing Baylor (574) and Idaho (576). North Texas (587) and Long Beach State (588) rounded out the top five.
CSU's Betsy Kelly is tied with Teo Poplawski of Idaho and Jaclyn Jansen of Baylor with a two-round total of 141. Kelly, Poplawski and Jansen are one stroke behind the leader Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho. Sarah Roering (142) is in fifth place only two strokes out of first and one stroke out of second. Brianna Espinoza is in good shape in 16th with a 147. Collier broke down the reason for the success of Kelly, Sarah Roering and Espinoza.
"Betsy hit 78% of her greens today and Sarah was 100% for her up and downs," Collier pointed out. "Bri came back today with four birdies and hit 12 greens."
Jessa LaBarbera (151) and Emily Roering (156) improved on their first round scores with second round 75's. Haley King has a 164 as an individual.
Overall, Collier is pleased with what the Rams have accomplished so far.
"This is a great position to be in for the final round and good experience for this young team," she said.
The final round gets under way Wednesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
