FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women's tennis team opens its Mountain West Conference play this weekend when it takes on No. 47 San Diego State and No. 38 University of Nevada Las Vegas at Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Rams (7-5 (0-0 MWC)) look to continue their three-match winning streak Friday against SDSU (9-6 (0-0 MWC)), currently on a season-long five-match winning streak. Following its battle with the Aztecs, CSU will face UNLV (11-4 (0-0 MWC)) Saturday before concluding play for the weekend.
Colorado State seeks to win for the first time in 16 matches against SDSU. In last year's match, the Rams took an early lead, notching victories in all three doubles positions in order to gain the first point. Moving into singles, San Diego stepped up play as the Aztecs swept the Rams for a 6-1 victory.
The Rams also seek to improve their 7-0 sweep against UNLV. Despite falling in all positions las year, Melissa Holzinger made an attempt to deny UNLV at No. 6. She fell to Hidvegi in the first frame, 6-0, but closed in after getting a feel for her opponent to eventually fall in the second set, 7-5.
Lauren Mulhern, Veronika Wojakowska and Kaley Schultz each extended their winning streaks to three matches last week as they notched wins in the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles positions, respectively. Holzinger also leads in singles for the Rams, tallying wins in five of her last six matches.
In doubles, Holzinger and Wojakowska come off of an 8-0 win over Weber State, continuing their winning streak to four straight matches.
The Rams will hit the road again next weekend to Utah, first taking on BYU March 8 in Provo, Utah. Following the Rams' match at BYU, the team will travel to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, March 8.
