SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Costly turnovers punished the Rams Saturday afternoon, as Colorado State fell, 66-57, to San Diego State at Viejas Arena.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for CSU (8-13, 4-2 Mountain West) and SDSU (16-4, 6-0) upped its win streak to 12 games.

“I really liked a lot of things we did in the second half and I liked the way we moved on offense,” commented Head Coach Kristen Holt. “The kids just can’t panic and go into survival mode. We have a lot to learn from today.”

Colorado State was down by as much as 13 in the first half. Sam Martin and Kim Mestdagh led a small late surge for the Rams, connecting on five points, bringing the team to within eight at the end of the half.

San Diego State wasn’t affected, however, continuing where it left off in the second stanza, going on an 11-2 run, bringing its lead to 17. Though the Rams never let up, cutting the deficit down to seven in the final minutes, the Aztecs held strong for the victory.

CSU, which was averaging just under 15 turnovers over the past three games, committed 22, allowing SDSU to convert 30 points off the giveaways.

Mestdagh was the bright spot for the Rams, scoring 21 points on the day. It was her third time in a four-game stretch she hit the 20-point mark.

Meghan Heimstra also had a double-digit afternoon for Colorado State, connecting on 11 points. It was her second-consecutive game in double figures. Martin had a small surge of her own at the very end of the contest, netting 11 as well.

Kelly Hartig had a rough afternoon with three fouls nearing the end of the first half, forcing her to lose playing time. Kara Spotton also corralled her second foul shortly afterward, costing her time on the court.

The Aztecs’ Courtney Clements continued her stellar play with 19 points for San Diego State. She was 5-of-8 beyond the arc. Chelsea Hopkins, a transfer from Duke, added 15 for the Aztecs along with eight assists.

The Rams will head home to close out the first round of MW play vs. UNLV Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
