DENVER, Colo. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team fell, 5-2, late Saturday night to in-state rival Denver. Despite the loss, the Rams captured two points, two more than they won in their 2011 encounter with the Pioneers, providing a bright outlook on the upcoming season.

“Even though we lost the match, we showed improvement over the last time we played them,” said Head Coach Jon Messick. “We lost 7-0 at home last time and we won two away this year.”

In doubles, the Rams fell in all three matches, with the closest match at the No. 3 position. Sisters Adriana and Veronika Wojakowska dropped their match just a tiebreak behind the Pioneers, 8-7 (7-3).

Unfortunately for the Rams, it would be later in the evening until they saw their first victories. After dropping matches at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, it was Kaley Schultz and Natalie Heffron that clinched wins for the Rams.

After CSU fell in three straight singles matches, Schultz broke the streak and came off the courts with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Denver’s Emma Isberg. Following her lead was Heffron at No. 3 as she defeated Denver’s Caroline Schnell in a tie-breaking third set, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.

“Even though we lost, the team showed that they were a lot better than last year and that the players were ready to get better,” said Messick. “We won at Nos. 3 and 4, which are fairly new spots, and I think we are getting a high level of play from our new players, which is always good to see.”

In the final match of the night Adriana Wojakowska trailed in a close tie-breaking third set, and eventually lost to Denver’s Natalie Dunn, 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 10-7.

The Rams will return home next week to take on Arkansas State at Miramont indoor courts for CSU’s home-opening match.
