SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Colorado State Rams (1-7-2, 0-3 MW) lost a tough match against San Diego State (5-5-2, 3-0 MW) 3-0 on Friday night on the road.
The Aztecs were voted as preseason Mountain West favorites entering the season by the coaches and even garnered preseason national rankings, so the Rams knew that they were in for their toughest match of the year.
From the start, San Diego State showcased its talent as it relentlessly attacked Colorado State’s defense. In just the third minute of the match, Sophie Metz scored her first goal of the season on an assist from junior midfielder Hannah Keane to put the Aztecs up 1-0.
SDSU would add to its lead in the 19th minute when Keane finished off her conference-leading eight goal to give her team a 2-0 lead.
The Aztecs scored its final goal of the match in the 32nd minute when Jensen Skinner found the back of the net.
In the match, San Diego State totaled 34 shots, but only nine were on target. The Aztecs also had 14 corner kicks in the match which kept the pressure on CSU’s defense.
The Rams managed just two shots in the game, including one on goal which came in a much more competitive second half. After relinquishing three goals in the first half, the defense shored up and kept San Diego State from adding to its total.
Seven players played all 90 minutes for the Rams, including co-captians Megan Speed and Jami Vaughn. Speed and Vaughn are two of just seven players in the Mountain West, not including goalies, that have played every single minute this year.
Colorado State returns home to take on New Mexico on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. The Lobos were selected to finish second in the Mountain West in the preseason poll and are undefeated in conference play this year.
