Head Coach Tom Hilbert
(on CSU’s defense)
“Once again, I feel that the high point of this game was our defense. I thought we blocked decently. They subbed a couple of players that weren’t playing great, and we tried to take advantage of them on that."
(on CSU’s offensive struggle)
“Fifteen unforced errors and 111 swings is not acceptable. That can lose matches for you in certain situations. We haven’t been doing it; it’s uncharacteristic, and I’m going to write it off as not a great match for us. I don’t think it was anything Utah State was creating. What’s beautiful about this team is all the other phases they stayed with it. It didn’t impact them. We were, from a standpoint of scoring, hanging in there with Utah State, staying close enough, winning these matches and then the game. That’s really good stuff. I thought we served the ball really well, put some pressure on them, forced them to get balls to people they didn’t want to get to. The players we wanted to contain was No 15, she was hitting negative. The other was No. 17, she hit .067, and then (Kaitlyn) VanHoff, who hit .000. We did our job in terms of neutralizing what we wanted to do offensively. I don’t want to sound like I’m disappointed in my team, because I’m not. I thought we executed that part very well. Offensively, we didn’t have a great match and I’m glad it happened in a situation like this where we still won."
(on Jasmine Hanna)
“I thought Jasmine was blocking pretty well. I could’ve done that (sub her out after struggling offensively), but we got through it. I wanted Jasmine to play through this, and she did get two pretty good kills at the end of the match. You want them to understand it and learn that they have control over the game; they can play through it and be better."
(on redshirt freshman Jaliyah Bolden’s strong performance off the bench)
“Jaliyah did a good job. She executed everything right. She actually, in practice, has been playing better than that. It doesn’t surprise me that she played well. When we get her into full steam she’s going to be a pretty effective player for us.”
(on hitting out of the back row)
“There are two different kinds of those situations: There’s where Deedra (Foss) is pushed way right and she throws it to her (Adrianna Culbert) out of system, and at that point Deedra is trying to cause trouble. Then when she gets it in system, that’s when she’s been doing really well. I didn’t think that would be open the way Utah State blocks us, but they were loosening up a bit and moving out so it was more open than I thought.”
(on Alumni Weekend)
“I think we had 40 former players here, and there is a whole group that played from 1978-81. They were the team that used to play in the IM gym and then got to move to Moby Arena because Jimmy Williams let them put a hole on the floor. Those guys last night were having an absolute blast telling stories and hanging out. I just think that stuff is cool.”
“Those players didn’t play for me, but a majority of them did. What I think is that this is a place where players have great experiences. You could look at teams that have multiple national championships and they don’t have great experiences, because there’s more to the experience than how far you advance in an NCAA tournament. That has to do with support, comradery, culture of the team, the fan support . . . those things are huge, and I think we do a lot of things right. I think it attracts people to come back because they want to come back and feel it again.”
“We invest ourselves in it. Some sports, it’s handled by people outside of the program; we handle it within, and I think it helps that our communication was so effective.”
Junior outside hitter Adrianna Culbert
(on defensive dependability)
“It’s pretty awesome. Jaime (Colaizzi) is amazing in the back row. I feel like because we’re getting so good defensively, it gives us the confidence that even if they do have really hard swings or if we’re one on one on the block we still can get balls up and run our offense, which is good.”
(on hitting out of the back row)
“I love hitting out of the back row. It allows me to jump more, and I can see the court. A lot of times, the way Deedra (Foss) runs her offense, nobody is really expecting it, so she makes my job really easy.”
(on Alumni Weekend)
“It’s just awesome knowing all the stories. Listening to them reminisce about the time that they were here and how special they found Moby to be. Just to know that you’re going through it right now, and that you’re a part of something special that so many people come back to because they loved being a part of it is amazing.”
Junior libero Jaime Colaizzi
(on her defensive game)
“I think it’s just as important as it has been every game for us. It just gives us more swinging opportunities. We covered the ball well tonight. There were a couple of times where we missed it, but I think we covered well, which helped. Like Tom (Hilbert) said, when part of your game is slacking you have to pick up in other areas, and I think we did that tonight.”
(on talking to former players)
“It’s cool. Last night I got to talk to four or five girls who were on the same team at the same time. It’s really cool to see how they’re all still really close and hear them tell funny stories like the stuff we do now. It’s just really cool to get to know people that did all this before we did.”
