CSU HEAD COACH Ryun Williams

(opening statement)

“Well it’s always good to get that first win under your belt, I think we saw a lot of those first-game type of jitter passes, not securing our rebounds. So (we were) maybe a little loose in that end, but Metro (State) is not a bad team. Last year (UCCS) came in here and we went to overtime. I thought our kids handled this game pretty darn well. A lot of positives that can come out of this game, and we will surely grow from this.”

(on getting better as the game progressed)

“You know we were trying to do a scouting report during the game, as far as personnel wise, tendency wise, and system wise. They run that triangle and they run it really good, and yeah, you’re right once we got a handle of what they were doing and the kids that were doing it, I thought we were much better. They scored 12 points in the first 12 minutes of that second half, so I liked that start of the second half defensively. I didn’t like the start of the first half on the boards. Their first six points were off of offensive boards, and the one kid we did know who could shoot was 22, and she rips ups and shoots a three. We have to be tougher on the defensive end. I think that was pretty obvious tonight. We do have some talent out there, there are some pretty skilled kids we just have to connect it and bring a tougher attitude.”

“She can be a dynamic player, when the ball is in her hands a lot of positive things can happen. She’s only going to get better. I think she just has to learn what the defense is like at this level and the type of toughness she has to bring every night, every possession at this level. I think our fans enjoyed watching Keyora. I do.”

“Jamie can really shoot it, I was more impressed tonight with Jamie on how tough she played. She is not just a shooter. She makes basketball plays out there, got to the rim a couple of times. She’ll finish those. She just proved that she was a really good basketball player. It’s always nice for those new kids you know; lights are on, first time in Moby. That might have been only our fifth time on Moby court since we started. (It’s) neat to get a look at those new kids. Myanne (Hamm) got in there did some good things. Victoria Wells, who sat out last year, you can see that she has a pretty special motor, likes to rebound, and likes to do the dirty work. This team is going to need that.”

(on balance scoring)

“I hope so. I think a positive is that we had four kids in double figures. I think our leading scorers, through our first 19 practices, I don’t think (they) had great games. They didn’t shoot it all that well. Elin (Gustavsson), she has been great. She has been our rock star in practices and she had a tough night. AJ (Newton) can shoot better and that’s how we play. We’re not going rely on a couple of kids. We have to be a balance team and we will have to grow into that.”

CSU PLAYERS

(on first game)

“It’s so nice not to just scrimmage. We play each other every day so you know everyone. You know their strengths and weaknesses. It was so much fun.”

(on making improvements)

“We need some work, definitely. It was a good first game, but we have a long way to go to get where we want to be.”

(on having a starting position)

“It’s definitely a transition, but I’m comfortable in it. I mesh with everyone pretty well.”

(on playing with four returning players)

“I know what to do and what not to do, and that’s what I look for from them.”

(on comfort in second half)

“The main focus coming out in the second half was to try and get them off of the offensive boards. They had too many in the first half so that’s what our focus was defensively. Just keep them off, move on and let offense pick up the tail.”

(on Williams’ coaching style)

“I think that was perfect because we’re still learning from each other. Having everything not be so controlled allows you to get comfortable. It just comes easier to you that way because it’s not so tense.”

(on first Moby experience)

“I like it. Compared to when I first came and visited, it was different. From sitting in the stands to playing, it’s a nice atmostphere.”
