HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
(opening statement)
"Nice to see the ball go in the basket tonight. I think this is a good game for our confidence. I'm proud of the effort. I thought we got off to a tremendous start and that was a big key in tonight's game. We didn't know what was going to happen with our injury situation, we're really thin right now. we're really thin at the guard spot. That pregame locker room was a little nerve racking, to see what was going to happen. Holy cow we had to play Victoria Wells at the point for 20-some minutes and she was really good there, and (Keyora Wharry) was really good there, and that was really good for Gritt (Ryder) and AJ (Newton). Good win and let's get ready for Illinois State."
(on the play of Jamie Patrick)
"Yeah Jamie (Patrick) can shoot it and you saw her score a couple different ways tonight and she's just a really good basketball player. She needed this night. She's shot it well in all of our games so far but you know, when you got a couple guards out, people got to pick up their production a little bit and she took some responsibility in that role. Eight threes, you know, she got in a nice rhythm. She was clapping for herself out there too. She likes seeing them go in. Whatever it takes for those things to go in. I'm proud of that effort and I thought we were really good in the push, we were really good in transition and it wasn't always really fast, it was very controlled tonight and I thought our decision making was a lot better tonight then it was, say, last Friday. You know, we found Jamie tonight, we looked for Hanne (Mestdagh) tonight. We got in the lane a lot, whether that be in transition or just our half-court stuff and they shared the ball a little better tonight, so a great, great team win. Some
good individual performances, I really liked the production by our wings, Hanne and Jamie as far as shooting the ball. Great energy by Victoria Wells. You know, our tall kids were solid tonight as well. We needed this. Confidence is big."
(on the play of Elin Gustavsson)
"I'm really proud of how Elin (Gustavsson) and Key (Wharry) handled that. That wasn't a punishment type of thing, we just think we're trying to find a rotation where we have good starting production and good bench production, and that was crucial tonight. You know, bringing Key off that bench where she was so good when perhaps, they were a little tired. It was critical tonight and Elin played really inspired. I liked how determined she played. I liked how determined all of our kids played tonight but I thought those two kids handled that little move with great, great maturity. They put the team above themselves tonight and that's the way it should be. Great teams serve others and we learned that and I'm proud of those kids."
(on the shooting of Keyora Wharry tonight, compared to against Hawai'i)
"We usually see those shots go in and you know, Hawai'i, you throw a little size at her, a little more size, a little more physicality, it's a little tougher finish, but when she's fresh and those legs are under her, she's a pretty dynamic jump shooter and she can get to the rim. Seven assists, you know, that just shows she doesn't just get to the rim but she makes the right decision and I'm really happy with how she shared the ball tonight. Twenty-three assists to eight turnovers, that's pretty good stuff."
(on the ankle injury of Gritt Ryder)
"Yeah, you know, she just went down and just kind of tweaked it running backwards. That led to her foot injury and she's just day-to-day."
(on the injury of AJ Newton)
"Yeah I don't know, she's just got a funny injury. We'll see what the doctor says tomorrow but she had a good practice yesterday, and she sat out shoot around today just to kind of rest it, and we thought we could give it a go and she could've played more. She could've played more and I thought her decision making at the start of the game was really good. And you saw that we had plays fast but that's okay. What did John Wooden always say? Quick but under control and we were under control I thought really all night tonight and that's why we played a little better. So were going to kick her in the knee more often."
COLORADO STATE PLAYER QUOTES
(on importance of tonight's win after loss to Hawai'i)
"It was so nice to win by 40 or 50 points. As a team we needed it."
(on coming off the bench)
"It's more about us trying to find what kind of team we are and trying to find out who fits with whom. The first group was more because of the last game against Hawai'i they were the group that finished the game and they had a lot of energy. It was more about starting with energy right away. Sometimes you have your down points and that's why I came out of the bench, but it doesn't matter who starts. Everyone played today and we played really well as a team. It was not that hard, but I need to find myself as a player again. I'm a thinker and it can affect me a lot. I should just play and trust my teammates as I always do."
(on Jamie Patrick's performance)
"It's so nice. Of course I always go for the rebound, but I knew she was going to make it."
(on absence of Gritt Ryder and AJ Newton)
"It's not just one player that can shoot, like Gritt (Ryder) and AJ (Newton), everyone can shoot. That's why if they don't play we have other players that can play and score."
(on tying school record for three-pointers)
"With my teammates help, they got me those open shots. Without them I couldn't have done that. So I guess I was just feeling it tonight."
(on shootaround before the game)
"I thought I was off during shootaround today. My coaches are always saying, `Don't let it bother you. You're a shooter and you have to just keep shooting. If you miss it you have to say you're going to make the next one. Don't miss two in a row.' With teammates being so encouraging, they know I'm going to make the next one."
(on post players)
"Our post does an awesome job. They're looking to score first, but they also do great kicking it out to any of the shooters not just me."
(on absence of Gritt Ryder and AJ Newton)
"Gritt (Ryder) is a big part of our team, and AJ (Newton) too. For them to both be out tonight, we wanted to come out with that energy like Elin (Gustavsson) was talking about. We needed this game and we worked in this game to get better coming off of Hawai'i."
