HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
(opening statement)
“Good win, it’s always good to win. Illinois State got off to a great start and I thought they responded really well. We had some kids play well off the bench tonight. I though Hanne (Mestdagh) was exceptional, she brought a lot of energy on the court. (Gritt Ryder) was pretty good off the bench as well. You know we took a pretty good shot early from Illinois State but I thought we regrouped and finished off the half like we should’ve.”
(on Gritt Ryder playing)
“She wasn’t going to play, she hasn’t practiced all week and now she’s just out there saying, ’Coach I don’t think I need to practice.’ Well yeah, we’ll see about that. Once she waited and tested the foot a little bit and knew she could cut. We thought she could stand by a little bit and lock on some shooters. You can tell we need her offensively; we’re a mess without her offensively. She is our Peyton Manning, so to speak, and she settled us down and got us some easy baskets and then she got 22 points. That production was great. I thought Gritt and Hanne both off the bench were the key to that first half. Gritt just ran the show and Hanne gave us defensive energy and made a couple of big shots that was big.”
(on Hanne Mestdagh)
“Yes, she has played a lot basketball games for us. She understands what we are trying to get done. Her basketball IQ is good and she is just tough. You know I thought we had some kids tonight that did not play with a great deal of toughness to be honest with you, but when Gritt came in it became a little more contagious. We have to play better. I didn’t like how we played to be honest with you. We will play some teams that are real challenges coming up and I need some kids that need to start growing up a little faster.”
(on sloppy play)
“We had some opportunities, we missed some layups, our power finishes we didn’t execute really well and made some bad decisions on who to pass too. We have a lot of stuff to clean up.”
(on AJ Newton’s injury)
“(She’ll be out for) a long time, we have to play without her and have some other kids step up.”
(on three-point shot)
“It’s crucial, and we get them. We hit some timely ones this afternoon. I thought Gritt made some big ones in the second half that kept our separation. With Hanne getting more minutes and Jamie (Patrick) playing a lot we might become a more consistent three-point shooting team.”
Gritt Ryder
(on coming off the bench)
“I think coach is trying to mix the starting line ups to match the other teams, but my ankle has been sore, so that was a part of it too.”
(on three-pointers)
“It was really nice especially because I haven’t practiced all week and I was nervous. I didn’t know how I would perform. Of course it’s always nice to have a shooting day.”
(on defensive game)
“There’s always parts where we could’ve done a lot better. Knowing the personnel we know the things we could’ve done a lot better, but all in all they scored 49 points so that’s good defense.”
(on playing time)
“I was expecting to maybe play three or four minutes.. It felt like the team needed me and coach felt calm that I was on the floor. It went well and my foot is doing well. I think (Keyora Wharry) and (Victoria Wells) do a great job and as they get used to it they’ll do better too.”
(on Gritt Ryder’s performance)
“She brings a lot of energy and fighting spirit. She calms us down. Keyora’s great at point guard she’s so quick, but Gritt calms us down and we felt kind of stressed.”
(on rebounding)
“We have struggled before with rebounding so we’ve been working a lot on it. That’s why we’re getting better at it and it’s getting there.”
