HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
(on overview of game)
“That’s a good win. We’ve had two highly contested games against DU in our first two years and we knew that this was going to be no different. That was a good win and we were happy with the win.”
(on 300th career win)
“Is that what it is? We just beat DU and I’m glad we beat DU.”
(on assist-to-turnover ratio)
“Our kids are very unselfish and we made the extra pass. I thought we had some great ball movement tonight. That’s good basketball. We had some stretches where we were very good, but it was streaky. It needs to be consistent. We had 22 assists, but you guys know we should have had a lot more. We left 20 points out there, no doubt, on missed layups that we’re surely capable of making. That gives us some ammo for practice tomorrow, but good execution. Everything leading up to that was really solid, but we have to finish plays. You go up against teams that you don’t have a 20-point lead and you need everything and every basket. We’ll surely learn from this.”
(on 2-3 zone defense)
“If we were in a 2-3 we weren’t supposed to be. It might’ve been their alignment. We can make a man look like a zone, but we manned up pretty solid all night. I thought two important keys were our conversion defense, they’re really good in defense and they fast break really well, and we didn’t give them a lot of that stuff especially early. We guarded their personal really well early. (Morgan) Van Riper-Rose and (Jordan) Johnston are really talented kids, but you can see they have zero conscious shooting the ball. That thing is in and out of their hands so fast and I thought our kids were pretty locked in. Guarding them early on in the game was critical. We didn’t let them get into a rhythm.”
(on Jamie Patrick and Hanne Mestdagh’s performance)
“Those two have made us a pretty darn good basketball team. They’re so potent shooting the basketball so you have to guard. It creates so much space offensively for everybody else. I think that’s why that assist number is really good and why you see us score at the rim a lot. More importantly, those two are playing really hard defensively and they’re rebounding the basketball. That’s how you have to play. You have to rebound and then score, and they’re doing all of that. Hanne has been making the most out of the opportunity she’s been given. I’m really proud of Hanne Mestdagh and Jamie have been really solid all year. We can stretch teams with those two on the floor. We’re getting to a point where we can play those two at the same time because the trust is growing defensively with those two. It’s been neat to see the progress.”
(on Keyora Wharry’s performance)
“The start of the second half Keyora was dynamite. She was really explosive and we got separation. She had some balance tonight. You can see that she’s a special athlete, but more importantly this was Keyora’s best defensive game. Keyora was really locked in defensively and that’s where we need to continue to grow. If she can do that she’s going to be a really good player here. She played great.”
(on scoring balance)
“It’s critical; you can’t be a one-dimensional team because you’ll be too easy to shut down. We scored in a variety of ways tonight. We had some nice cuts in our motion, the three-ball has been good to us and Ellen (Nystrom) had a nice stretch in the pro-post. We don’t play with a conventional back to the basket kid except when Alana’s (Arias) in there. I thought our variety was solid and that’s really important for this team. We have to continually consistently score the ball.”
“We just found confidence as a team. Our shooters are starting to make a lot of shots and it’s flowing really well. When the team is going it’s easy to get going myself.”
(on assist-to-turnover ratio)
“Coach always yells at practice when we turn it over. We’re just calm and that really helps us. We have smart players on our team who make good decisions and coach puts us in a position where we shouldn’t turn the ball over.”
(on 12-0 run)
“We played really good defense. We held them to ten points for a really long time and that’s the key for what we need to focus on. We just got going and started making some easy shots. We like sharing the ball and when we’re having fun it flows much better.”
(on celebrating Ryun Williams’ 300th win)
“We didn’t want to do anything, especially before the game, we thought we would jinx it so we’ll have to think about that.”
(on assists)
“We flow really well. As a team we know who to pass it and who to get the shot to. Gritt (Ryder) had a ton of assists tonight because she knows where to pass it and who to pass it to.”
(on Keyora Wharry’s performance)
“She is a tremendous athlete. We’re all confident that when she drives in there she’s going to make it. We have confidence in her.”
(on Denver’s three-pointers)
“We knew who their shooters were and we knew that if we didn’t get our hands up in their face that they were going to make it. That was our game plan to come out and not let them go on a run.”
