HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
(opening statement)
“This was a busy week for us, three games in six days with a team that is not the healthiest. We are a little thin in numbers and we challenge our kids before this week. Three big games with different opponents, different styles, this needed to be a really focused week. We needed a really determined effort today and I think our kids did that. I’m proud of they went through this week with a really tough mind set. We’re facing all kind adversity there is no doubt about it but we did it again today, proud of this victory.”
(on Ryder’s injury)
“Just a bad hamstring, we need Gritt, the way that we preformed late, you can see that we need control out there somebody that can get us in our stuff and calm us down a little bit. So she will get some treatment, all the studying will make her better.”
(on Victoria Wells and Alana Arias’ play)
“I thought that the key to our victory was two kids, Victoria Wells and Alana Arias. Alana had that advantage inside she did a nice job of playing under control, she got some really nice deep touches and finished really well. Alana is playing about at on a scale from one to ten she is probably about a four. As far as conditioning and being ready, but she is going to be a pretty good player for us, and our kids did a decent job at getting her some touches and giving her the ball at the right time. But the energy came from Victoria Wells, she comes in the game and we get better, our team needs to match that, she saved us, Alana saved us. And that needs to become contagious, the energy, the high level play, that determined effort needs to become contagious and I thought she willed us to a really good victory today.”
(on good defense in the second half)
“We kept the ball in front of us, you saw in the first they got in the middle of lane and got some layups and got some runners and that sort of thing, but we did a much better holding the line, containing the basketball. That was a team that averages 82 points a game and what did they have today 46. That’s impressive, we were just pretty locked in on keeping the ball in front of us and rebounded well. Watching these guys on tape, this was the most concerned we were going into a basketball game, they had our attention, they play really fast but they didn’t get any fast break points, we did a good job of controlling that so our get back defense was right where we needed to be.”
(on rallying without Ryder)
“It looked that way, we went on a 17-0 run at the in the second half and a lot of that was when Gritt was out which is kind of uncommon for us because first of all Gritt is never out and we don’t know how to play without her, that was a big run, our kids have each other’s back, they really do, I was proud of how they picked themselves up after Gritt went out.”
COLORADO STATE PLAYERS
(on scoring career-high points)
“I had a size advantage. My teammates did a really good job passing the ball inside and I posted up hard.”
(on confidence throughout the game)
“I wasn’t playing much, and then making three baskets in a row to help my team was really special.”
(on injury)
“I broke my rib so I was out for almost four weeks. It feels really good now. I like playing with my teammates and they did a really good job today.”
(on defensive strategy)
“We knew that they were very athletic and fast. We just played zones so we had to box out every time and make sure we grabbed rebounds. They were super athletic so we played hard defense and made sure we packed it in.”
(on slow start)
“We’ve had a long homestand going into the break where we have finals. We have a week to get better and we wanted to have a win streak. They did get off to a strong start, but we were able to get to together in the huddle and say that we need to rebound, push it right back at them, be more patient with the ball, then we can play defense. We collectively decided that we wanted to come out of this game successful. It took a slow start, but we were able to find it and get there.”
(on Gritt Ryder’s injury during the game)
“Gritt’s a huge part of our team, she plays 40 minutes a game and she has such a strong passion for the game. We knew that when we lost her we had to step up even more than we already did. We have to pick each other up. There was an intensity and we came together a lot stronger after we lost her because we knew we had to step up in a lot of spots that she’s normally there for.’
(on winning streak)
“It always feels good to win, but the next game we play we’re going into it as if we were on a three-game losing streak. We want the same results.”
