HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
(opening statement)
“Cal Poly, they’re a gutty team, they would not leave, and they just would not leave. I thought we did a good job in the second half and they got some weapons out there. (Ariana) Elegado got loose a couple of times, and she makes you pay. They showed great courage today, Cal Poly did, but our kids were really courageous. Of the eight wins in this non-conference (season) this is the one that I am the most proud of. We’ve faced so much adversity this first half of the season, we’re playing with no true point guard, we got the iron seven and they were really good today. They played a lot of minutes and made big plays late when they were really tired, it was just a really nice win.”
(on playing shorthanded)
“You could tell late in the game that we really needed point guard out there, we had some possessions that if Gritt (Ryder) or AJ (Newton) we would play more calm but that wasn’t the case. The fact that all these kids played such a huge role on our bench and now our bench became our starters, now they have to really produce for a significant amount of time and that is not easy to do. We’ve done that a number of times this year and now we are excited to get everyone healthy obviously, but I think what we’ve done in this non-conference schedule is we developed a really nice bench. We have so much confidence in Hanne (Mestdagh), we have so much confidence in Alana (Arias) right now. When we get back and we get healthy whenever that may be our depths will really prove to help us as we go through the Mountain West conference.”
(on good defensive plays)
“I thought we were disciplined on a few matchups. I thought Alana showed some really good discipline and stayed home a little bit and I thought that last possession Hanne was brilliant on the ball. Elegado was really trying to shake Hanne and she just sat in that stance and got a deflection, and that was the play of the game.”
(on Arias’ good play)
“She got some easy touches at the rim in the first half, I think she was 9-of-10 against Florida Atlantic and she goes 6-of-9 tonight, she is a good foul shooter, she is really big in the middle of our zone, and so you can see that she is getting better and better every game. Each half she kind of sparked us, she made some big baskets and she made so big free throws and we need it. We were up two at half so all we had to do was tie the second half. We knew that it was going to go down to the wire, Cal Poly is well coached, good kids.”
CSU PLAYERS
(on six-person rotation)
“We also knew we had to play harder because we had so many good players out like Gritt (Ryder) and Tori (Victoria Wells). They bring up the energy so we knew that when we stepped out on the court we had to play harder for them.”
(on comfort level)
“I feel better playing and more comfortable. I came in with the same mentality as the last game to be aggressive on the offense and looking to score.”
(on coming off of the bench)
“To me, honestly I don’t really care if I start or not. To me it matters most how I finish the game. That’s all I care about.”
(on ending nonconference play 8-3)
“We’re going to continue practicing hard just to make sure we keep going during conference.”
(on six-person rotation)
“We had to control the tempo. We had to play slow and play our tempo and not let them stress us out. That was the big thing and why we won.”
(on playing point guard)
“I like it, it’s fun and we need players to play different positions because we have two of our starting point guards out. I just stepped up and took the challenge.”
(on ending nonconference play 8-3)
“I think we’ve done a good job because we’ve had so many injuries and we’ve been unlucky. We have still fought through this and we’re going to continue doing that in conference.”
