FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams (1-3-0) got a close-hand look at the program it aspires to grow into, as the Iowa Hawkeyes (5-1-0) downed the Rams 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at The Lagoon.
For spurts of the match, the Rams looked every bit capable of hanging with the more experienced Big 10 foe, but crucial mistakes ended up being the difference. After nearly 27 minutes of scoreless action which featured both teams creating dangerous opportunities, Iowa broke through when senior Cloe Lacasse disposed the CSU defense and put away a shot from six yards away.
Just 16 seconds later, the Hawkeyes again capitalized on a turnover from Colorado State as Lacasse assisted Bri Toelle on her scoring effort from 15 yards out to give the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead. The Rams settled down nicely after the quick goals, but were unable to muster up a clear scoring chance.
“We’ve been a victim of our own problems the past couple of games with some mistakes that have cost us goals,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “Unfortunately on the other end, these more seasoned teams aren’t making these same mistakes.”
With the 2-0 lead Iowa did not slow down, piling up 14 shots in the first half compared to just one for Colorado State. The Hawkeyes also had the advantage with three corner kicks compared to zero for the Rams as the two teams went into the break with the match at 2-0.
It didn’t take long for Iowa to put the game firmly out of reach as Lacasse again found the back of the net in the 51st minute. The Hawkeyes added another one in the 76th minute when Melanie Pickert headed the ball down into the corner of the net off of a corner kick from Corey Burns.
Colorado State’s best opportunity of the match came on a free kick from senior defender Jami Vaughn in the 65th minute. Vaughn lined up a free kick from 25 yards out that cleared the defending wall and started to dip, but went just over the bar. In the second half, the Rams earned seven corner kicks and added six shots.
Colorado State will next take the field on Sept. 12 for a home contest against the SMU Mustangs, the second meeting all-time between the two programs. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. MT at The Lagoon.
