HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
(opening statement)
“Defensively we were pretty solid. We held them well below their average, we were pretty locked in. We let Porter go crazy a little bit, but that was the only way they were scoring. Twenty-point win when resting our best player, got AJ (Newton) sometime today, a lot of good things happened today besides the scoreboard.”
(on 18-0 run at the end of the first half and start of the second)
“Our kids said in that last media timeout before the first half ended that they are not scoring again and they only had 18. They got locked in, but we weren’t really concerned on that end of the floor. It was the other end that we really piecing together some possessions and we had a hard time manufacturing some good offense (today). We got to have some kids play better on that end of the floor but we are happy with the win.”
(on Arias’ performance)
“Alana, here she goes again, 6-of-10 today, 12 points, 21 minutes. The kid is so efficient when you get her to the right spot. The thing that Alana has to do is continue to get herself to the right spot more often. She is somebody that we surely like playing to. She is big in our zone and she makes timely basket. She is shooting over 60 percent on the year from the field, so we have to do a better job of getting her some more touches.”
(on being able to rest Ryder and play Newton)
“Those were the two main things that we got accomplished today, that we can help Gritt get ahead of that injury a little bit. She pushed it really hard out in Wyoming, which is probably why we played so good. And getting AJ back in the flow. I thought AJ played a really good floor game and I thought she saw the game really well, and she sparked us by making that first basket as she got to the rim. She played fearless. AJ is close to being back and it was nice to give her 31 minutes (today), and she’s only going to play better, so that obviously makes our team better.”
CSU PLAYERS
Elin Gustavsson
(on slow start)
“This time, I didn’t feel like our energy was bad and we weren’t hyped enough; everything was good. It wasn’t clicking.”
(on defense)
“It was more that Coach (Williams) said, ‘Defense is fine right now, but offense. We have to score. We have to move the ball and have good cuts and everything.’”
(on Newton’s return)
“First of all, it is safe to have her on the court, but then it is so nice to see her being back. I mean, she’s been working so hard with rehab and everything. She’s been on the side working all of this rehab with Jacquelyn (Harris; strength & conditioning) and Annie (Lopez; athletic trainer), and it’s so nice that she’s back because she’s been working hard for it.”
AJ Newton
(on slow start)
“I think we’ve just been struggling with that it seems like. Just kind of really good game, then down, and then really good game, and then down. I think we’re still trying to figure out just how to play consistent before it’s too late so we can still keep ourselves in the running for another championship.”
“It just wasn’t clicking enough even throughout the whole game, but we found a way to win and that was awesome.”
(on defense)
“Our defense was really good, but we were struggling for some reason to get the ball in the basket. It has to start clicking soon; we don’t have a choice.”
(on offense)
“That was kind of like our “problem” today; not hitting shots. Some of those threes that Jamie (Patrick) takes, we normally can hit those, but it just wasn’t clicking today.”
(on her return)
”I’m so happy. I think that being out 11 games you kind of feel like, ‘Whoa, everything’s moving fast,’ and I’m still trying to figure out where I fit. I mean, the team played 11 games without me, so now they’re adjusting to me coming back and me pushing the ball again, and I have to adjust to our whole rotations and how we play, and how we play with each other.”
