HEAD COACH Ryun Williams

(on AJ Newton’s play since her injury)

“She had some bounce back (today). We’re getting there. It’s nice to see that AJ (Newton) swag back a little bit. She had a little burst, played with some confidence. She brings a lot of spark to our team when she’s like that.”

(on CSU’s defensive play)

“They really attacked, they get a lot of shots off. They’ve got over 100 more three-point attempts than anyone else in the league. They let it fly. Their pace, their relentless attack for 40 minutes always poses a problem. We have been pretty good defensively for the most part, and we’ve had to be. Our scoring has just been streaky, a little inconsistent. The chemistry isn’t quite there yet, but we made some nice steps (today).”

(on the upcoming bye week)

“We’ve got to use this week wisely, we still have to rest some kids. We need to get ahead of some of these aches and pains that we’ve had. Hopefully we get to practice. We haven’t practiced with our whole group together, so hopefully we get AJ and Gritt (Ryder) on the floor at the same time and Emilie (Hesseldal) back out there. We didn’t want to play Emilie today, the elbow’s been bugging her. She going to have to deal with a lot of banging these next three games against some really big post players. She is really good against those types of kids, so we want to get ahead of that injury, so we didn’t play her today. Hopefully we get some practice in and we can get some chemistry going.”

(on Victoria Wells’ injury)

“Victoria (Wells) is still suffering. The concussion symptoms that she had prior to Christmas, she just isn’t shaking those symptoms. We’ll see her when we see her. We just need her to get healthy first of all and take care of herself.”

CSU PLAYERS

Elin Gustavsson

(on San José State’s fast-paced play)

“It’s hard because it makes you want to play fast, and we don’t want to play fast right now. We kind of want to slow it down without it getting stagnant. They’re a really good team and they’re good when they get going, so we want them to get soft.”

(on CSU’s defense)

“I think we just have a lot of players that have a high basketball IQ. For us, I think it might be easier if they play zone. We can just pass the ball. One extra pass and we have great shooters in the corners.”

“We have great scouting, too, like personnel. Who to go out on and such.”

AJ Newton

(on gaining a flow of playing with each other)

“I think tonight it finally felt back to normal, as in last year. I mean, we scored a lot more than what we’ve scored in all of the other conference games. We’re still trying to figure it out, but I think we have plenty of time left still.”

(on defense)

“We want it to be like, if you’re on the ball, you’re on the ball, and if you’re off the ball, you’re in gaps just so they can’t go to the middle and go to the basket. So if they made a three, we’d rather have that then them being able to get to the free-throw line and get lay-ups. Towards the end they were doing that a little bit more, but our whole principal was just to stay in tight.”

“I think we weren’t really scoring early on, so it was like, well, we can still win if we score some. He (Ryun Williams) really made it important early in the season that we need to be really good on the ball with defense and really good help; we trust each other out there.”

“We’ll let people shoot; that’s our plan sometimes.”

(on SJSU's full-court press)

”I think just taking it slow (helped). You get ten seconds so just to calm down and trust each other. We haven’t gotten pressed like that, and Fresno State does it, so it was nice to know that we can break a press under control without turning it over. I don’t think we had any turnovers on the press.”

(on SJSU’s defense)

“It’s kind of funny that they played zone on us, actually. I mean, we have Hanne (Mestdagh) and Jamie (Patrick) out there and it’s just like, if you want to zone us, go for it, but it’s not the smartest.”
