HEAD COACH Ryun Williams

(opening statement)

“First of all, Boise was great and we had to play exceptional, maybe our best of the year, for sure our best half of the year to beat that team. That was a good college basketball game, very entertaining. You saw both teams go blow for blow, making basketball plays. I’m so proud of our team. I’m proud of Boise. Holy cow did they make plays, but great results for the Rams tonight.”

(on defensive changes in the second half)

“We didn’t do a whole lot different, we just executed a little bit better and we became more determined. Boise scored 33 in the second half that is still a lot. They got good players. I thought Boise’s start put us in for a long night the way they were shooting the ball, the way they got in the lane. They were outstanding offensively, but we were just as outstanding early on offensively, and that kept us in the game. We were good offensively early to kind of match them, we got enough stops in the second half, and Gritt (Ryder) got us off to a great start to start the second half so that was critical to close that gap as quickly as possible.”

(on AJ Newton’s performance)

“AJ made some big plays down the stretch, that drive and an and-one, and I do remember her rebounds. We played with great toughness, winning the glass is great. Great toughness, that’s as tough of a win that we’ve had here as Colorado State in the last three years.”

(on Victoria Wells)

“Kept some plays alive, got some good rebounds. Yeah, we didn’t have Wells in Boise. Not only her energy, but her play making ability, her ability to rebound. I think that was a big reason why we won tonight as well.”

(on Deanna Weaver’s play)

“We ran two kids at her a lot, it was Vic(toria) and Ellen (Nystrom), but then they put in a lot ball screens. So AJ was switched onto her and Gritt was switched onto her, our posts were switched onto her a lot, so that was team effort to shut down Weaver. I thought (Brooke) Pahukoa had an outstanding game, she got to the rack and her pull up game was outstanding. We needed to be exceptional offensively tonight because they were.”

(on the crowd)

“Our crowd was big time. Our kids even said that in our final huddle, we needed them that last 2.5. They gave us that extra energy, to get a couple more rebounds, to get the crucial stop, so we don’t win without that crowd tonight.”

(on Fresno State up next)

“They got a big-time basketball team as well, we are going to have to play well. I don’t think they have been beaten at home yet, they got great guard play. But I’m happy right now and me talking about Fresno doesn’t make me very happy, so let’s stop talking about Fresno and enjoy this win tonight.”

CSU PLAYER QUOTES

AJ Newton

(on tonight’s win)

“I feel like we just won a championship. I think it’s because we know we could be undefeated in conference right now if it wasn’t for Boise (State). Just knowing that we get to play them again and we get to win is great.”

(on Gritt Ryder’s three-pointer)

“I think everyone just thought that we were going to try and hit the rim. Then when she made it, I thought that we have to win this game. If Gritt can hook it up from half court, then we’re going to win.”

(on rebounds)

“I don’t know who I thought I was today. Everyone boxes out and it just comes to me. I just have to make sure I catch it. To be honest it’s all the team.

(on Deanna Weaver’s performance)

“I think we were all just upset that she was killing us and our whole team effort. At half we said that whoever is on her to make it their mission to stop her. As soon as we can stop her and slow her down, we can stop everyone else. She’s like the heartbeat so once you’ve stopped that it’s easier to go on a run.”

(on upcoming game against Fresno State)

“It still hurts that we were so close to the NCAA tournament last year and Fresno (State) is competitive, so it’ll be a close game.”

Gritt Ryder

(on halftime)

“We talked about how we had the worst defensive half we’ve ever had. We just tried to step it up there. We’re so competitive so that’s not how it’s supposed to go down.”

“We joked that we had more than 3 minutes left and we’re not down by 13, so we can do it.”

“We actually didn’t talk about offense at all during halftime because we scored 37 points and that’s probably the most we’ve scored in a half. I just think Ellen’s (Nystrom) competitive too, so she wanted to come out and score it.”

(on momentum after three-pointer)

“I don’t know what really happened. We were actually in warm up practicing arch and seeing how high we can shoot, and it paid off. I think it created some momentum and it got Moby excited.”

(on shooting)

“It’s just the competitiveness. My team is great at getting me the open shots, I hit some lucky ones then I was feeling it and kept shooting.”

(on winning free throw)

“It always sucks to miss the first and it’s always better to miss the second at least mentally. I was thinking I already made four or three in a row so I didn’t know why I was missing it now. I just tried to breathe and I knew I had to make it.”
